View Full Version : LLAMS & Traxide dual battery install on RRS

Expecting both items in the mail this week so if there are any Perth members with a RRS that have already done it I would appreciate any tips or even take a look at your install before I start. Lots of tips on here and instructions are fairly straight forward but can't beat real life experience, especially things like "if I done it again I would have done this"

Cheers

Yes did get them via email and browsed thru it, seems to be the D3 instructions which are much the same but differ when it comes to placing the cables past the back door, should be able to work it out.
I'm the typical guys that reads instructions after things have turned to crap!

Can't help with anything RRS specific but you'll find it pretty straightforward. The instructions are comprehensive. You've probably seen this thread which has a few good tips worth reading:
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/223663-traxide-battery-tray.html

My other tip would be to buy a few of the metallic spring trim clips and a "magnet on a stick tool" before starting. I was very lucky and retreived all of them but a few involved blind luck. I have since lost a couple when opening the panel under the steering wheel, which you need to do for both Traxide and Llams.

Do you have a UHF already? I pulled my coax aerial cable through the firewall during Traxide installation using the same grommet so that I didn't have to go back in through there later on (didn't yet have head unit or aerial at the time). Left it coiled neatly under the bonnet until ready.

Cheers,
Scott

PS you'll need to change you signature now you've decided on Llams :)

Yes UHF was already fitted but have retuned it for repair as plug is faulty, when I get it back will look for a better spot to locate it as they just cable tied the cradle to some pipes up under the dash !!!! Some auto sparkles can be rough as guts when installing things that are out of sight

Let me know how you go, I fitted the traxide to our previous D4 but looking at the back of the RRS it's definitely different, harder to get under the panels, no access panel on the left, and ours has the DVD stacker in the right rear compartment - which has a much smaller door than the D4 jack and tow bar access doors.

There's also some extra wiring in front of the battery compartment I don't recognise, and the TDV8 has heaps less space around it to get to the firewall. Fun times.

I also wasn't at all confident pulling the grill off so left it in place.

Does anyone know what the heck these buttons are, right where the tray should sit, and where should I put them?

Looks like a couple of circuit breakers to me

Hi Stuart and Shane is spot on the money. But be careful as that looks like a typical auto electrical job.

6mm Auto twin, using the red for one positive and the black for another positive.

This is not illegal or whatever, just down right dangerous if someone starts working on your electrics.

I would guess that that is for your trailer breaks, if you are set up for them.

It would pay you to make sure what they are for because auto electricians do some horrible jobs.

Thanks Tim yeah the car came with a tekonsha installed. I was wondering why there'd be two circuit breakers!

Hi again Stuart and my guess is one is for the trailer brakes and the other is for some sort of power supply.

Don't be surprised if it is wired up as a quarsi dual battery setup or 3 way fridge supply.

Note, the maximum size fuse/circuit breaker for safe use on 6mm AUTO cable is 30 amps but auto electricians regularly use 50 amp CBs and then wonder why they have fires.

Also worth checking where they have run that cable.

It looks like it may be run down through the chassis rail and if so, you will need to remove it, because if you ever need work done on the motor, they take a few bolts out and lift the body off the chassis, cutting any wire/cable running through the chassis.

Thanks Tim you're a gold mine!

I would say they are the circuit breakers for the trailer brakes. Why 2???,unsure,to deal with +ve feedback from a fault within the trailer brakes, possibly. Our Turbo Territory has them on both feeds if I remember correctly, done before we bought it.

LLAMS installed today, fairly straight forward apart from a small glitch during calibration, a quick call to Graeme and all good.
Haven't placed the switch or button yet, not many options as the redarc trailer brake is already on the LH side of steering column.
Hopefully the Traxide dual battery system arrives tomorrow and get that out of the way and then all set for a bit of camping and serious bush bashing.
Thanks for all the tips and info to date.

Here are my Spotlight,Redarc and Traxide controls. You could put your LLams switch here I guess.

Is it feasible to shift Redarc to light binnacle to make way for Llams? Alternatively quite a few people put the Redarc in place of a centre 12V socket.

It is actually good to be able to see the Redarc dial when in use.

Was eyeing that spot off, does that panel just pop out? Besides the dial switch mine also a small press button switch but not sure what that does yet.

You reach up from below to pop the securing clips.Do you have(or were spotties fitted before????) That could be your press button switch;););););)

Just checked it out and will go with that spot, the press button switch is part of the LLAMS, its very small and will fit there also.

So going from my pic,if I do get a LLams, will the switch fit on my facia????

I just installed LLAMS today. Brought an unused brand new unit from gumtree. Haven't installed the rotary switch yet as the panel that sits behind the handbrake switch has had a switch installed into it. Bloody hole in it is way to big for the llams rotary switch.

It should be ok up there on the rhs somewhere, its slightly bigger than a redarc dial. The RRS only has the one 12v socket in the console so not really an option.

Andrew and Shane, I would suggest these locations for your Llams dial and button if other locations are taken/unavailable. They work well.

Something to consider, it only gets used infrequently for special modes and you don't want to be accidentally pressing it, which may happen if it's close to other light switches or adjacent to the Llams rotary dial. Better location is under the steering column. Just food for thought.

The wire length on the button switch is only 50 cm with the idea that the switch will be mounted in the webbing below the steering column.

Some people mount the rotary switch on the right side of the steering column surround when the spot on the left side is already in use.

Graeme, will suss out your suggestions tomorrow, LHS of steering already has redarc brake dial and like the idea of using the RHS with press button on the webbing underneath. What's involved in removing the steering column surround, if its to messy I will put the dial near the light switch as per Landyandy,s setup.

IIRC there are 3 screws, with the 3rd in the centre towards the rear that's a little hard to spot.

LLAMS and Traxide dual battery system both installed and working a treat, got the Engel in the back already with a slab in it.
Decided to keep the existing power socket on the LHS as is and added an Engel plug instead, installed the socket that came with the system on the RHS so have plenty of power options (3) to choose from in the rear of the car.

Next move is to remove the white tailer plug and mount the Anderson plug on a bracket in that space.

Brake sensor light came on today so a full brake pad change on the weekend.

Thanks to Graeme & Tim for there instantaneous assistance on the phone to sort out a couple of minor glitches, where else do you get that sort of customer service ?????

For goodness sake get some convoluted tube around that cable or a grommet where it goes through the the panel...

Well done! Any trouble getting the panels and rubbers up to get the wiring across the back? How did you get in to the LHS rear without an access door like in the D4s? How long do reckon the whole traxide install took you?

sandgroper57

Had to remove the panel across the back and the side panel on the LHS and the horizontal one near the back LHS window, not completely, just enough to access by hand and drill a new hole from the top for Engel socket.
Whole job took around 5 hours easy, getting the main cable under the B pillar and then down through the back cross member was probably the most difficult. Like everything it would take a lot less time if done again.
Removing the spare wheel does help a lot.
