Will the "moving map" work with a laptop and
a Garmin GPS72 attached to it? :?: :?:
I ask as it would be a waste of money buying the data cable
I have sold my boat and rather than flog the GPS reciever on Ebay
I thought it could be used in this scenario
Any comments please...........

Gavin
if you can connect a data cable from the gps to the computer and the software will recognise the gps you will be fine

The answer is yes.
However if the laptop has no serial port you will need a serial to usb converter, around $30.

Where do people get them from?
I've found a good one here: http://www.computermarket.com.au/prodDetai...l.php?ID=442380 (http://www.computermarket.com.au/prodDetail.php?ID=442380)

Any computer shop will have one. If there is no shop near you order one online, eg gpsoz.com.au.

I think so, along with things like null modem adaptors, serial cables, USB cables, Bluetooth USB adaptors, CF & SD cards, card readers etc.

as long as the gps output nmea sentences you'll be ok.
btw - they all do so no dramas.
re laptops - i had to look for a long time to find one with a serial port.
finally brought a compaq nx9040. only one around.

Not all GPSRs output NMEA. Some, like the base model Magellan eXplorist and Garmin Geko do not have any external data ports at all. These are definitely best avoided. Serial-USB converters work well so there is no need to have a dedicated serial port.
