I only have one key - and I need a spare one.
What is the best cost effective way to get a spare one? Thanks in advance.
PS - I did search this forum but only found info on repairing damaged key cases.

Direct from Land Rover. $250(ish) when I checked about 6 months ago. They need to be ordered from the UK.

For the D3:
Amalgamated Locksmiths in Brisbane sell non-genuine key fobs with transponder for $220. You then need to cut and program. This is what I did.
MR Automotive can order in genuine from UK but quoted me $365, already cut but you still need to get programmed.
The IIDTool can be used to program keys.
Many locksmiths can also get in and program for you as well. Most have a universal key fob programmer that covers most car makes. Charges to cut and program can be up to $120 plus cost of key fob.
When you get a quote from LR, or find an alternative do post what you find out.
Cheers.

Unfortunately it is hard to get out of this for under about $400 - $500 bucks by the time you get the fob and have it cut and programmed.

What if my expensive key/s got stolen or lost?
Would my insurer help out?
Just wondering.

Probably, except that most people have an excess of around $500 which probably means you are on your own.

Sorry! Probably $350 . I know it was a similar price to getting one direct from the UK as I emailed a dealer over there.

I received a quote from Duckworths in the UK - looks like around 150 quid ($330) for the key.
I'll look at getting that and then try to find a programmer. I'll keep you posted. Thanks.

So what was the quoted price direct from a service agent? Obviously not cheap.

Here's the email I received from LR UK back in June:
A replacement key for your Discovery 3 is ?172.37 including VAT (which we have to charge). It would take 2 working days to order, and would require full payment in advance. Also, I would need to see copies of your Registration Document (or whatever is the Australian equivalent) and driving licence, so that we have 2 documents with the same name and address that tie you to the vehicle. Due to the logistics, if you would like to e-mail me copies of these documents, that would be acceptable.
Many thanks for your enquiry. If I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Regards.

What dealer did you go through. Just paid 50k for a disco4 and as I was going to car I realized wtf only one key. I have 3 keys with my patrol. Dealer was trying to get me to pay 570 for key.
Thanks.

You have to be local though as you need to take the car in (Melbourne). I just ordered mine for $363.50 odd...I'm happy with that.
Good luck.

Just happened across this website.
Car Keys Online - Genuine Land Rover Discovery 4 / Freelander 3 Smart Remote Key (http://www.car-keys-online.com/product/252/genuine-land-rover-discovery-4-freelander-3-smart-remote-key.html)
LR D4 key is GBP 120 + 10 shipping, so GBP130 is approx $280 at the moment then the programming and key cutting if you want it (they will do it for GBP 6 from the key code). If you have one of the diagnostic tools (i.e. Nanocom) then you can add a key yourself.
