Im sure this was asked before but there's so many threads I can't keep up so here it goes again:
Got a Disco 3S 4.0 Petrol running on 20inch rims and road tires profile 45 and need something more rugged for off road - mainly beach with some gravel and rocks.
What's the best way to go (load rating, price, width/height etc)? I seen the early S series can take 17inch rims up? Can the Discovery 2 18" wheels be fitted (plenty on gumtree)? What about RR or RRS? Also seen some comments on X5 rims being compatible....
Would 19" do the trick? What would be a max size tire to put on a 19?
Please help a newbie !
If you know anyone wanting to sell a set in WA let me know as well...
thanks

Avoid 19's, very poor tyre selection available (although getting better).
If you are planning on running two sets of rims then get 17's for off roading and keep the 20's for around town. If you are planning on only having one set then 18's would give you the best of both.
Can't help with info on the D2 rims. Yes, X5 rims fit.

Dont get 19" rims.
The worse thing about my D4,it has 19" rims, its the ONLY thing Im not happy with.My only real option is aftermarket 18" rims which are not cheap.
Go 17" or 18",you have plenty of rubber options and its available away from the city. Not many 4x4s run 19":(:(:(:(:(:(

Give Steve at Lifestyle 4WD in Morley a call. ;)
He recently had a set of 5 D3 18" rims for sale, complete with good A/T tyres, for a very reasonable price. Last I heard, he still had them.

D2 won't fit as the centre locating hole is smaller diameter.
X5 rims fit but you need different wheel nuts.
Best option as LandyAndy and others point out is 17 or 18.
Good info on 18" tyre options can be found here - oh - and some neat rims as well. 😀

Would king rims of D 2 work? someone's selling a set of 17 inch Kings and it seems like my D3 would take a 7.0x17 (printed on the door)

If they are the steel ones on gumtree, they should fit.Centre bore is OK,as steel rims use the wheelnuts to centralise the rims. You will need suitable wheel nuts. The only thing you need to check is the offset for the rim, perhaps get the part number off the seller(will be stamped on rim) and double check on the king rims website for fitment.

Yea it's of gumtree but apparently they are 8.0x17, trather than the 7.0x17 printed on the door. Not sure about the wheel nuts but I'd imagine that would be another hassle to find ?

8x17 is fine, you just need to make sure the back space/offset clears the rotors, getting the part number from the seller and checking with the manufacturer will solve this.
Try a holden dealer or wrecker for wheel nuts, the VE/VF commodore has 14mm wheel nuts(same stud pattern too).Try one before buying to ensure the thread is the same pitch. You want the steel rim nuts(basic dunnydoore with plastic wheel trims).

what would be the best size to put on? local shop said that 265/65r18 would also fit, which apparently is a bit more common for second hands than 255/60.....
Any pointers?

Have a look at Gordons website,GGHaggis on here.
You need to google Green Oval Experience.
He has a spreadsheet on there with all tyres that fit.
I would go with the most common size, especially if driving in the country.

Plenty of fans of the Bridgestone D697 in 265/60R18 here, myself included. There's a few threads recently where people have had good things to say about a few other tyres too, eg BFG KO2 in 265/65R18.
