The, I presume fuel pump as it has a handle on it and the piping comes from the fuel filter is leaking diesel all be it just a drip.
I was wishing to know if any other TDi 300 owners have had this problem and if so what was the solution.
I'm awaiting my RAVE cd so I don't want to take spanner to the unit till I know what I'm doing..
All info will be appreciated..

Never use the primer lever on the pump it's a sure way to wreck an old pump. They also crack on the top where the fuel line from the filter joins.

Hi DirtyDawg, i had this problem, but mine sprang a leak whilst out 4wding, luckily someone in the convoy had that metal putty so we fixed the leak enough to get me home. The cause of the problem, is the line running from the lift pump to the fuel filter isnt long enough, its to tight and over time it works on the fitting into the top of the lift pump and eventually breaks the seal and diesel ****es out everywhere. The only fix is a new lift pump, about $100-120 from British 4wd, just give alan a ring, or send him an email. Then once that is fixed look at lengthing the line to stop it from happening again. As Shaun said dont use the lever, just put everything back together and turn the engine over till it fires, thats all i do anyway and i have never had a problem. Matt

*****, and I've always thought I was a good boy scout by priming after a filter change ????

typical, can't win either way.....

I do recal Dave from South Oz on the AULRO list fitted an electric pump after his lift pump failed on his 300Tdi Defender, and just fitted a blanking plate where the mechanical pump was.
He reckoned it was a breeze to prime after that as well.[/quote]

Thanks guys, I wasn't doin anything this Sunday anyways..lol Anoys me the way it has to be replaced and not repaired... I might see about a flexible pressure hoses from Pirtek if the problem is as Matt says that should solve that problem.
As for the electric fuel pump, an interesting alternative.

thanks again

If fitting a new pump, be sure to hold the "pump bonnet tube fitting", with a spanner to prevent twisting it.
If you don't, chances are you will cause it to crack and leak.

I think all this talk about fuel pumps has been done before, all I can remember is 'farmboy' or something like that was the person who started it off.( or that may have been his background)
The pump was removed and the hole covered with a blanking plate. Why because the injector pump gave enough suction to bring fuel in. . The post started because of a broken fuel line. I recall commenting that my pajero doesn't have a fuel pump, it goes fuel tank , fuel filter , injector ump , injectors. I don't see why L/R should be any different. Why put in a replacement part if you can do away with it.
