Cutting disc use by date.

Well I must admit, the angle grinder is my" go to" tool but I did not know this untill I saw it on another site this morning.
The useby date is stamped or printed on the boss.
It seems the adhesive breaks down and after this they should be binned.
How many of us check the use by date when buying new discs.

Correct... And if you've ever seen them let go in anger... You'd be replacing them too....

Hmmm, I use mine before they go out of date... :D

We sell cutting disks from small to huge at work and it is a check the branches do quite often to ensure we aren't selling out of date stuff. We bin (after breaking them in half) quite a few.

I guess also a good reminder that they are rated to a edge speed. I had one customer adamantly tell me that he buys 9" wheels, wears them down and then puts them on his 5" grinder. :eek:

What's wrong with that? I've being doing it for 25 years ever since I found a 4.5" grinder with a 22mm spigot. Never even once did the disc look like being in trouble. Halve the diameter, halve the edge speed on the 9", back to normal on the 4.5" :)

As for old cutting discs, just gently flex them and see if they crackle and split. If they do they're junk. Otherwise just keep them in a cool dark cupboard instead of on a nail in the full sun.

If you're grinding get a full face shield, it's not just your eyes that will need protecting if the disc lets go. Dropping them also has the potential to damage them to the point of destruction, from what I read

I think you'll find most companies do this in an effort to help save money. Try throwing what is essentially a half used 9" disc out into the bin and see how the boss reacts to it,,,
