Was just listening to this on the news, obviously there was a pretty big cave down there somewhere.
At least nobody is missing.

Yeh, not the first sink hole to open up in that area.

Glad no one was hurt, must be a very confusing experience to have your car and caravan simply disappear into the ground!..

I remember seeing this when it was first reported a couple of years ago in Louisiana. Pretty scary if you are anywhere a sinkhole when it develops!

Edit: Just found some background info on the above sinkhole

Twenty four acres across?
When did an acre become a linear measurement, what does it convert to in metres?

I always thought this was interesting.
A whole lake was drained into a salt mine...

The sinkholes in the US are different from the one on the beach. Louisiana and Florida (and other parts of the US) have limetone under the ground. Over eons the lime stone is eroded away just as it is in cave systems and when it gets thin enough the surface falls through usually into the freshwater lake underneath.
The one on the beach would have been caused by the liquifaction and migration of the sand into the ocean, same result, different sinkhole...
