2.2 110 fuel tank leak??

so after the expo I filled my fuel tank up and noticed it was leaking underneath. It may have started prior and I didnt notice as it had been raining. Normally my fuel gauge goes under the full mark at around 150kms and this time it was getting under at 110/120kms.

The leak stops after about 5/10 mins. presumably when the fuel goes down a bit. that said it doesnt look like its a major amount of fuel. enough to blot the floor but not like gushing out.

Was told to check the breather which by the looks of it is all well and secure? the leak seems to be coming from the middle top part of the tank... I'm guessing its a job for the dealership?? or is there anything I can do to check without having to drop tank? I've really only filled twice wherein I've noticed it. Dealer cant take car till 16th so I'll just have to deal witha bit of spillage till then or not fill to full

I had my new Defender towed to the dealership when it leaked like this, I even got them to flat tow it back again when they had fixed it? In my case the o ring that seals the fuel tank sender unit had dislodged - this was on a 2.4 PUMA which did not have the in tank fuel pump.

I had it towed on the basis that the leaking fuel presents a significant danger to motorcyclists and I did not want to be responsible for a serious accident. They towed it and fixed it the next day. I'd ring Land Rover customer care and ask them to fix this as a very serious un roadworthy issue.

I noticed with my defender, that if I fill beyond the first nozzle click. It will over flow/leak from the breather pipe. So now I just just fill to the first nozzle click and it's fine.

If you don't fill beyond the first nozzle click and it still leaks, then it could be the pump/sender as other(s) have mentioned..

These leaking fuel issues are beginning to pop up every where. I had one a while ago. It turned out to be a split tank. Then another when the breather fell out of place. It warrants an investigation I think.

The 2 common faults with the fuel tank, I get with the Defender TDCi (puma) is:

*The easy fill hose (its that 25/30 mm hose that goes to the top of the filler neck) falls apart near the fitting on the top of the tank (replace with some quality hose).

*The one way valve for the tank breather line (that small hard plastic line) gets stuck open (its ment to allow air into the tank, but stop fuel coming out).

When I fit long range tanks, I replace that easy fill hose and re-route the tank breather line right up behind the filler neck.

Well I've overkilled the spec of that hose, it was the best most resistant to diesel I could find, so it should see the life of the Defender...

One would hope, my issue will be when I have run out of that hose is getting more, as now with the drop in the mining boom, all these suppliers have been doing the "oh we dont stock that anymore", which means they aint selling truck loads so they arent getting it in.

So - I filled up on Saturday close to home - and probably over filled the tank because I went passed the 1st click :o

On Sunday I came out to see there was diesel 'dripping' out of the 'hockey stick' vent / breather hose. The issue I have is the vent hose was dangling (freely) in the wheel arch - just in front of the filler pipe - the car is parked up hill (slighltly) so that would not have helped.

I have looked in the space in the wheel arch before and was worried about the filler pipe being in the firing line without protection - but did not notice the 'hockey stick' vent pipe - perhaps one of the black cable ties copped a stone and it has came loose. There are a couple of other cable ties further down holding it to the filler pipe.

I have placed the 'hook' behind the filler tube to help protect the opening and added a few cable ties.

I think I will look to extend this breather hose some more.....

My 2.2 130 started leaking out the crooked breather. It only happened occasionally and after a hiflo fill. I put a small soft drink bottle on the end of the tube to confirm the actual site of the leak.

The fix was to extend the tube up the back of the cabin. Stopped the leak and also in a better place to keep water out.

I think LR should redesign and recall all of those breathers I've heard enough to know it's a real issue.

Extend the breather pipe with some black nylon tube after pulling the breather and hockey stick off and feed it up the chassis to the engine area under the bonnet. It won't leak in here and will stop it getting any water in the tank and as an added bonus you can put a little air down the hose to pressurise the tank in order to prime the fuel system.

With Bear this has happned twice.

First time it was a slight split in upper hose - repaired and all good.

before this happened I used to fill the car up to the nozzle! Even giving it a shake to get the air bubbles out! :) and no problems until that day

2nd time, was because I filled past the first click!

It is designed to be the fill cut off point apparently. I stop now when it clicks off and no more leaks etc.

It did happen again and Daz fitted a second hand tank and rerouted the breather pipe.....
Apparently not the same fault as previously but this time the inlet pipe split around the tank and when the tank and auxillary were full it leaked out.
Bloody thing is giving me the whoops....:mad:
