Hi all,

This is my first post on the forum and any help or advice you can give will be much appreciated.

I've owned a 2010 d4 3.0 for a year now. It has been serviced since new by ricks 4wd who I understand is a good bet for landrover maintenance.

It is overdue it's service now but I have noticed several problems that seem to be showing up and wondered if any of you can give me some pointers:

1. When the engine is pushed harder EG going up a fairly steep hill there is a groaning vibration that starts. Sometimes this noise is present even on a flat surface and nearly always shows up when accelerating hard. I'd describe it like a harmonic resonance almost like the transmission whine old panel vans used to have.

2. I've noticed that when coming down hills, irrespective of speed the car sticks in gear. I could start at the top at say 1500rpm and by the bottom it will be near 3,000rpm yet it will not change up a gear even though I'm not touching the accelerator. I've tried to force it to change a couple of times by suddenly pushing the accelerator and it bangs into a higher gear, probably because of the high revs. I'm wondering if getting a gb oil change may be a solution here? Makes sense as I want the metal pan anyway and the car has hit 74k km.

3. On the rare occasion I put my foot down I get an enormous cloud of white smoke behind the car. Lately this smoke then keeps coming out for 3/4 seconds. The smoke is very dense and sits above the road for ages. The engine seems to be much less quiet these days and sounds a bit laboured. Could this be a dodgy injector? I've read about the turbo hose which could be the culprit and the workaround is unlikely to have been done due to independent servicing. Is this a fairly easy job for a diyer?

4 finally I've notice a high pitched squeal that shows up now and then at speed. Almost like the sound of binding calipers where a calliper is touching a disc. It only happens now and then and I think it's more pronounced when turning in one direction. I understand that bearings are prone to make a noise depending on which way you turn but would normally be a humming noise not a high pitched squeal.

Sorry for all the questions. Any help or ideas will be great. I'm pretty happy to get my hands dirty but would say changing coil packs and sparks on a 360 is about as capable as I get.

Thanks

Graeme

#1 could be the tail-shaft centre bearing, for which there was an updated bracket for very early models due to poor welds.

#2 sounds as though the gearbox software has never been updated.

#3 will in all likelihood be that it needs the updated secondary turbo drain pipe to be fitted. The work takes a couple of hours to do.

Could #4 be a stone caught between a dust shield and a calliper? This happened to mine several times.
