Not much different to what I paid to have mine done Andrew. ;)

Mine was done through Barbagallo, but separate to the purchase of the vehicle. I don't know who they used to do it, but was an external business close by in Osborne Park. I also had a loan car, as they did a couple of other jobs for me at the same time.

Hi Andy, I used TKO Tint in Carlisle. They do a lot of prestige cars and get a good wrap. I think I paid about $350 2 years ago.

Just under $400 not quite 2 years ago.

I wish I had ordered the tint before delivery, its a pain in the arse to get it sorted now.At least this Tint a Car mob offers a free loan car.
Why the sudden interest???? Every 6 months I visit the skin cancer doc since having a melanoma removed. He finds more "spots" to ice every visit,I also have another to get cut off my right ear shortly. The toll of a ranga's misspent youth and worship of the sun:(:(:(:(:(:(.
Work just bought me a secondhand ute,to replace the old Rodeo,it has tinted windows.I had the vehicle at Tint a Car today, asked him was my ute legal. He tested it,the windows are all 35%.The difference of driving the 2 work utes and the sun coming in the windows is huge.He says the Disco should tint up the same or better, just what I wanted to hear:cool::cool::cool::cool::cool:

I understand where you're coming from Andy. Not a ranga myself but have fair (read that as snow white) skin. Went 5 years with the dermatologist cutting bits and pieces out of me which were fortunately only BCC's. Worst one was on the end of my nose and required a skin graft - thought I was going to lose my nose the way he was going. Been ok for about 7 years now except for the annual torture with liquid nitrogen on my less than follicly endowed head and face etc. Not fun at all. Good luck with it. :)

Body only plonked back on to shift it into town from the farm. Its a resting project that I cant license, despite obtaining the correct permits for the conversion.
Has a 6" lift, ford 302V8 and C4 auto. Most of the stuff under the body is new, engine is poor, but always was going to get a fresh 351 V8;);););) The engineer was happy with the chassis/engine/gearbox mods.
ONEDAY,it will be my beach fishing rig or creek bed racer.Must remember to keep praying to them lotto godz;);););););)
I had it running mocked up before the chassis lift etc, even with the shagged out 302 it was a monster;););););)

You don't need to spend money for window tinting if you are doing it for skin cancer prevention. The glass alone does that pretty well. Tint improves this only slightly.

In my research Opticool Pilkington glass is pretty good at keeping out the heat. I had originally intended tinting my D4 as I had done many of my previous cars. I haven't yet because this car just doesn't seem to need it.

Perhaps it cools quickly with rear air con, but what ever the answer, my D4 does not seem any hotter than my previous tinted Navara or XJ8 Jag or VW Eos.

My conclusion: Tinting is really for looks. Spend your money on something else. :)

Window tint not only helps keep the car cool it also reduces the penetration of UV rays into the car.

It does not necessarily need to be hot to be a high UV rating day.

Privacy glass usually does not stop UV penetration.

If you do not want tint but want to reduce UV exposure you can get clear film that is applied in the same way as tinted film.

No way mate... The difference between decent (heat/UV rejecting) and cosmetic tint is like chalk and cheese...

Benefits are numerous...

Improved privacy
Improved security - harder to smash and grab
Heat / UV rejection for passengers and interior materials
Reduced eye strain from glare

Consider also the legal tint on the first window row and then much darker for second and third row, which is also legal. That's what I did and I love the look if I could work out how to post a photo I would show you. Gives you the privacy glass look with better protection in the first row.

Andy,

Sotuherns did mine for $600 in Feb this year when I bought it. Great job (privacy at rear) and no dust etc under the tint which has happened to me on other vehicles.

If your aerial is on the rear side windows make sure they do not damage it when trimming the tint.

+1 for TKO in Carlisle. Doing a lot of high end cars they seems to know how to take a bit of care in what they're doing. Was about $400.

I went legal front, very dark back. Looks great and no visibility issues.

The Tint a Car price was for the darker tint for the rest of the windows.35% solar passing thru is the WA rule for drivers/passengers glass, the rest of the glass is 20%.

Optikool is only a 20% IR (heat rejection) glass - No UV specification is given...

3M Crystalline Tint is 99.9% UV block and 40% IR rejection (in legal) going up beyond 50% in darker films...

I run a 3M Black Chrome (Metallised) tint and get over 70% Heat rejection - however I may be only letting 10% light into the car  - They do this film in a 40%, 35%, 20% and 10% film

I've been quoted $430 for 3M Black, and $1100 (!) for 3M Crystalline. I'm primarily interested in reducing heat into the car, so the Crystalline product does seem better (60% solar energy rejection vs 40%).

The price for the Crystalline seems pretty steep though so I'm wondering if the thermal performance difference is really noticeable in the real world ??

Stand under shade on a stinking hot day...Then stand out in the direct sunlight...

Its that different!!! Add A/C to the equation and you'll turn the fan down (or it will slow quickly if on Auto)

You mean the difference between 3M Crystalline vs 3M Black, or tint vs no tint ?

Worth asking about the UV protectection as there is UV-a and UV-b. UV-b is the protection needed to stop burning.

The easiest way to remember when checking out tints (and sunscreen) is as follows

UV-a (a = ageing, deep penetrations and skin cancers)
UV-b (b=burning)

I got mine done by the dealer before picking it up..... got it done for $695 with 35% front and 20% for the rest. I got it done at the dealer mainly due to time constraints of sending it to Tint A Car. Also the dealer siad they take off the door panels and tint 1 inch below the Glass, so it doesn't get peeled off by the window going up and down.

p.s. I have a White 2015 D4 and I'm VERY jealous of your beautiful Bull Bar there, Andy!!! :) (I'm waiting for ARB to bring theirs out, then mines going on. hehe)

hey guys
we are looking at window tint as well for our D4

would it be possible for some of you guys to post some side on views of your D4s with what your window tint shades are so we could get an idea of what each percentage you guys went look?

we cant decide if we should go 35% legal on front windows and 20% rear
OR just go 30% all round?

Our D4 has a cream/almond leather interior (apparently this may make the tint appear lighter than usual??)

I was thinking the 20% all round might be too dark??and look very gansta lol

It's upto you on what tint you get, but I am very happy with mine being 35% Front and 20% all round. It is a way of having dark tint, but still being legal in the front windows. Having a 1yo son in the car, it certainly helps keep the heat out of the back seat!!!

This is 35% tint all round from a while back, we are happy with it. The a/c keeps up with Brisbane summer easily.
Not the easiest thing to photograph for comparison purposes, depending on the angle it can look pretty dark.
We have the almond interior.

Yeah cheers Scott,
thats exactly where we are after,
just some examples of what colour tint actually looks like on a vehicle,
we grabs some samples from the tint place, but they are relatively small off cuts and very hard to use to get an idea who each wind actually looks!
the sample tints seem heaps shinier in the flesh?

your black wheels sets your beast off too, it looks great,
makes me think i should look at plastidipping my factory silver wheels black lol

i am guessing you have a dark interior?

My wheels are the grey version of the Compomotive but look darker in that photo.
To get an idea of plastidipped, have a look at ~Rich~'s photos. Seen in the recent 18" mud tyre thread.

Booked in for tomorrow at Premier tint... cheapest is $295 dearest with 66% heat and darkest legal for $350. They will do the rears in 20% vs 35% also at that price (or the whole lot if you want to take the risk) Will look at the films when there on cars they have, think i will stick to 35% all round. Stay tuned for pics

Just bear in mind, not all films are created equal and hence often the price difference, and cheap is not necessarily the best - you get what you pay for.

Not pushing their product, but Johnson Films have some interesting info (as do other manufacturers -3M comes to mind) on their web site about the properties of their products - Johnson Window Films, Dealer Resource Center (http://www.johnsonwindowfilms.com/dealer/articleView.php?ARTICLE_ID=132)

Ahg did what was my D3 last month for $350 by tint a car for darkest legal all round. If you're buying from a dealer try get them to lower the price. $350 is trade... I paid $500 direct on the last large car so that seems about average.

And which is the best tint from Tint Professor? Does the Premium Elite work ok with the keys etc?

I've had Tint a car do three cars now in darkest legal premium except on the Pajero with privacy glass which doesn't filter sunlight so they put a clear "tint" on which still made a great difference, all less than $450 per car. Some of the best money you can spend IMO.
