exhaust fumes

Loving my new acquisiton -1988 Perentie GS but while i have the rear flap rolled up which makes it much easier/safer to drive (can see out rear view mirror etc)but sucks too much exhaust fumes into cabin- surely there's a better spot to run the exhaust pipe?

You can put it wherever you like. Straight out the back and pointing down or even out the side before the rear wheel like the 6bys do.

In NZ it has to be 300mm behind the last passenger door, or something silly. Does Australia have a similar rule?

You probably won't have that problem in a GS though...

I run around all seasons with the sides up and the back down with no fume issues. I leave the sides up for lane changing/motorcyclists too....

The 'window' flaps are pretty useless - mines an FFR anyway, so visibility is poor at the best of times.

You need to open your front vents and/or windows to create a flow of air through the cab.
We used to do this with the old panel vans, run around with the top tailgate open and the windows down to avoid the fumes.

As Bearman said mod the exhaust outlet so it goes straight out the back

Yes very similar although I can't remember the exact rule. Basically can't be near a passenger door.

I think that would make it worse. I had a friend with a 2.4 diesel Toyota Surf, the one with the electric window on the tailgate (and pipe straight out the back). If you opened it while under way you'd just about asphyxiate.

I just had a look at what the surf owners say to do to fix the problem; comically, they suggest rerouting the exhaust out the side (http://www.toyota120.com/forum/showthread.php't=22952).

I was reading that the reason for this is with the sides down and back up, you create a low pressure point behind the vehicle which sucks air back inside. Based on this, I would say anywhere out the back would be bad. Bearman's suggestion of side, before the rear wheel sounds pretty solid to me.

Works a treat. Never any issues, and just did 8000k in 3 weeks without the noise being too much.
