After my recent incident where I nearly flattened one of the lycra army - 100% his fault not mine (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/general-chat/211485-ing-cyclists-65.html#post2423024). I've been inspired to look seriously at setting up a dash cam.

Lots of reading has me looking seriously at Blackvue DR650GW-1CH Anyone got one/used one that would like to comment?

It will be primarily just recording as I drive, but as a handy spin off, I reckon it should be great for off road video. I'll also set it up so that it can turn on with movement when parked.

For not a lot more, I can get 2 Channnel unit, giving me a camera out the back too. might be useful is someone shunts me, might also be fun looking back off road (Assuming the back window isn't covered in mud or dust.)

I'm torn between the second cam being useful or a waste money.

What do others think?....

I've not been moved to install the rear camera on my dash-cam (not a Blackview). Perhaps a good option if it doesn't cost much more.

I was looking at this the other day. Definitely going the rear camera as well if and when I get one. Was told about a new product on the market for about the same price as the BV 2 channel but the rear is also full HD and it does not require the extra power box that the BV does to the the monitoring while parked:

IROAD DASH CAM | IROAD V9 (http://iroadkr.co.kr/global/?page_id=4467)

I like the discrete size of the BV.

Blackvue has a name for themselves bur IMO there are better options to be had for the price with better quality.

If you want front only, hard to best the Street Guardian SG9665GC for video quality and reliability.

If you want Dual channel, The Marcus 5 is 1080p Front and rear and about $150 cheaper than the blackvue equivalent.

I'm getting one of these dashcams Mark, this little unit has two 125cb memory cards and for under $200, great value and is a recommended dashcam by Dash Cams Australia.

I have that model (previous version as well) in my car(s) , very good and reliable, I tried two other "brands' over the last two years both of which failed.

I have had the Blackvue in the D4 for quite a while now Mark. Got some very good footage from it when we were at Melrose. I only have the single channel, but have been very happy with it.

Our young bloke recently bought the dual channel version of same for his Amarok, but don't know if he's installed it yet.

That Koonlung is the best I've seen. I like the idea of the separate camera and head unit, those little cameras are very discreet.

Can you get a unit that also has a rear reversing camera option? That way you would only require one screen up front ?

One of the attractions to me of the Blackvue is that it doesn't have a screen. But it does include built in GPS and WiFi

I already have a reversing cam and really dont want too many more gadgets hanging around the car....this will tuck away neatly behind the mirror

The way I can view it on phone, tablet or PC or browse and save video clips via WiFi works for me. I'm still not 100% set on it..... but their software seems extremely good.

Thanks for your help everyone, ended up buying a Blackvue DR650GW-2CH, installed it today... so far I'm impressed.

I'll put up an installation post in the next few days.

So - can you watch the video from your iPhone in real time i.e. could it be used as a reversing camera? I am thinking of occasional use such as hitching my van etc.

edit: I just read this on the dashcams site - so it answers my question!

Smartphone App
"The BlackVue App is free to download for all customers, this innovative app works on both iOS and Android devices. The camera can connect to your smartphone or tablet device using the app, once connected, the user can download footage, view a live feed, save settings and more"

Cheers,
Col.

You could Col, I think I'd find it a little it fiddly, as you need to connect the phone to the devices Wifi. I think I'd get tired of that fast if it was my primary reversing camera.
