One of those, lets pop into Aldi and see what this one has moment. Bondi Junction still has 2 of their winches on sale, $400.

I want a winch, but wanted rope instead of steel cable, I am tempted, can someone please help me out with my decision?

Buy the winch then buy some Dyneema to replace the steel rope. Simples.

That's what I did. :)

...... And then sell the wire rope to help defray the cost ?

I got mine about a year ago but it was exactly the same one as they had again more recently.

Worth the $400 then? Just trying to figure out what I should do, the eBay ones are about the same with dyneema plus about 60 odd for postage BUT this has a few more features.

Yeah, it's not bad for the money. I dismantled mine before installing it to have a look at the grease and general build and for the money it's pretty good.

Get the Aldi one. At least you got a winch then! And put that $60 you'd be spending on the postage on an unknown eBay winch towards some Dyneema. If you don't get the Dyneema straight away the steel is perfectly fine anyway.

I'm not knocking the eBay retailers but I'd expect Aldi to have a better warranty coverage. It might be worth the few extra $ for that.

its a good winch and if its the same as the one I have the internals are the same as the iron man winch in the same lbs class.

service, or have someone service it for you and pack it with proper grease, rework the cable seals.

keep the wire rope on it till you bust it then put your synth stuff on. What I've taken to advising people who want to use synth to do is to put a very small fly lead onto the winch anchor point and keep the main coil of rope in the vehicle out of sight and sun in a bag.

when you need to winch simply bend the main rope onto the fly lead and power it in for at least 5 turns of the main, set up what you need to recover then winch up the slack. When you're finished winch it all onto the drum (you may need it again) and when you get home, unspool it into a mesh laundry bag, chuck it in the washing machine, hang it to dry overnight (or hang it up in the gargage) then put it back in the bag in the car.

(with the way the costs keep coming down on the synth rope its not going to be long until you can afford to carry a single rope for each major length recovery you need to do.)

The Aldi winch has written warranty detail in box and the distributor is in Melbourne for parts and repairs.

The first digit in the IP code is particle protection and is between 0-6
The second is liquid ingress protection and is rated 0-9
It may be IP67 which makes it dustproof and not damaged by water immersion to 1 metre for 30 mins. That sounds pretty good Does that include the control box?
No Aldis in WA yet, so got a mail order Runva which has been fine

They will do the job , get you out of a hole , or up a slippery hill . Most winch owners I know use them to recover other people . Keep the steel cable , the little bit of extra weight wont make any difference to you Land Rover . By the way I do have one , only ever used It once . Probably because It sits on my garage floor !!..Jim :)

Yep. I meant 67 - had a moment of dyslexia.

I was more interested in whether or not it was even close to being that rating, not the actual meaning of it.

Sounds like a good plan then!

Thanks, I will duck off and grab it tonight then.

Now I just need to remove a small dent in the bullbar to be able to fit it.
