no, not the puma. I bought the defender 90 for sale here. its a 1993 so i imagine thats a 200tdi? ex uk. apparently its got a possibly leaky head gasket. possibly not. its got about 156k km so motor should be good atleast. I want to convert it to auto so I can give it to my wife (so she cant say I bought another thing for myself)
is it as simple as just putting box in and necessary bits etc?
could I push my luck and put a td5 in?
edit
Or I'm even thinking of putting an auto in. whats the legality of putting a 3.9 or 4.0/4.6 auto in??

You will have trouble finding parts as we didnt get the 200tdi with an auto here, you might have to pickup a d1 wreck .

Converting to an auto using Discovery parts is mechanically fairly easy - but I'm pretty certain that you will need to make some floor panels etc, as the ones for the manual box won't do. Very doable, but if paying someone to do it, a fair bit of labour to pay for.
Converting to a TD5 is also doable, but would be a lot more work.
Converting to a V8 would is technically doable, but would be a lot more work again, and you would need to consult with an engineer to make sure your plans would be able to be approved before committing to anything.

Will watch with interest as we would like to convert our 200tdi 90 to auto also. And yes we realise that we will need to get parts from the disco

Ashcroft do a 300tdi auto conversion kit. Maybe drop them a line to see what they have. Lots more 200s in UK so maybe there are some that have gone down that road. Apart from that it should be a doable option if bits are sourced from a disco , the auto is the same length as a r380.

Ii will have to be a 300tdi auto and even then not all the parts can be used, i know Joel B92 8NW looked into it years ago and think he gave up in the end.

Yes we have a 300tdi to go into it for the auto when it's time. While we love the 200 as its just a bloody work horse it's tiring and needs to be changed out.
I was just curious to see what old mate does in terms of panelling for the auto etc
Edit just went back and looked at my post. Didn't explain myself very well did I lol. I currently have a 200tdi 90 that we want to change to an auto we have a 300tdi engine to go in just need an auto etc and we realise we will have to likely use some disco parts. Sorry first post was terrible hahaha

i was thinking the same till a penney dropped
When taking it in for a recent service the mechanics found a leaking head gasket and suspected that one cyinder head needs replacing.
might be the boat motor ?

Most of the local club members did this conversion, it is a simple swap since Discovery I parts were used, both donor and receiver vehicles had V8 engines.
