View Full Version : Unexpected Articulation

My D4 is getting new air struts fitted and they came across a bit of a problem. I've replaced the rears previously but my fronts have done 200,000km and I haven't really had a problem with lack of damping or anything. However, when they put the car on the hoist the left front wheel hung down several inches below the correct location, giving me huge articulation. Probably due to a failure of the full extension limiting system in the shocks. The right front was normal.

Unfortunately this causes problems. The inner CV was at full rotation and binding at this angle, however, it seems to be OK still. The main problem is that the bushes in the upper control arm have been damaged, the sway bar bushes are damaged and the sway bar link to the suspension is bent. Since my car gets to full articulation quite often, it also affects the diff mountings as the diff gets pushed up and across at this drive shaft angle. They also found that my EGR pipe was chafing against the suspension tower and had worn through.

I haven't noticed any problem with any of this while driving and I don't know when it started. I just noticed a bit of wandering when on NSW outback roads, which must be some of the worst bitumen roads in Australia due to the ruts in them. Also some tram lining on some surfaces, I guess due to the play in the control arms as well as my wider tyres. I had the lower control arms replaced probably about 40,000km ago and they are still good.

Perhaps I should have replaced all the struts at around 120,000km. They were actually probably all stuffed but only the rears were noticeable to me at that stage.

FYI....there is some very good after-market struts available via eBay. They are American made and I will certainly grab a set when I need them!

There is also some OEM struts available for $225 if you have been quoted more.

I am not getting el cheapo struts, especially after the experience of the guys who put expensive Koni's on only to have them fail in a short time. I am getting (have got) the latest OEM D4 struts and air bags from England, using the part number guidance suggested by Graeme. They are already on the car. I'm just waiting for the extra parts that are required as a result of the damage from the increased unintended articulation so that I can take the car home.

200,000 km has been an expensive time for my vehicle but it should now be reliable for the remote travels that I do. My main concern that remains is the transmission and if there is any doubt I will get it rebuilt. My transmission expert assures me that all is good at the moment. I am willing to pay to keep the car reliable as I am not going to upgrade and do all the modifications etc all over again. I can't imagine doing the trips that I do in anything else (apart from a RRV) after experiencing the D4 for the last 150,000km. I have never done so much long distance driving with so much ease and comfort as I have done since buying the D4.

Do you have any links for these? Thanks.

Bob,

what part numbers are you using and what vendor in the UK? I have seen some horror prices with the looking I have beeen doing but like you I do not want el cheapo struts/airbags.

I am intending on replacing the complete strut/airbag units front and rear. D3 with 205,000km on it.

cheers
