Gas Struts

Having a real Land Rover Defender with the tyre on the bonnet:), it becomes a little heavy as the years roll on:( plus the 130 rim and tyre are much heavier:o than the original Series One. Has any one fitted Gas Struts to the bonnet of a Defender, what size and locat[ion of the anchor points would be appreciated:). Peter

Umm, I'm thinking discowhite or was it whitedisco did this to his 90....

The suppliers of these struts often have a calculating tool which allows you to work out the necessary strut type, pressure, stroke etc.
You would need to bring info like the weight of the bonnet, ideal strut compressed/extended lengths and some other details to the party though.

I've thought about doing this... everytime I have to do the "clean and jerk" when opening the bonnet of Dad's TD5 Defender. As he is an old hard-a*** Land Rover owner of old, the "spare wheel on the bonnet" was the first mod I was required to do.

While I dont think a pair of struts are going to support that sort of weight, I do think that they could certainly assist the lifting part until the stay is put in place.

I think the limiting factor would be the strength of the bonnet, your brackets, and your ability to pull the bonnet down. You can get some incredibly strong gas struts.

easy to get the struts to lift issue is getting them down. hand crack winch looks silly but is practical.


to set the struts so they are neutral when closed-horizontal- so you can latch the bonnet. the strut will be pushing its mountings at a maximum the hinge is not the best.


but giving you no assistance to start the lift.
