I have this fitted to my car. It was Opposite locks car. Works good and can even take my weight when I stand on the spare wheel to reach the roof rack.

Have had one on my D4 for over three years now. No issues at all with it.

I did replace the horrible looking square tail light that it came fitted with though, as I didn't like the look of it, and wanted to change to LED. Found one that much better matches the original LR lights on the inter web.

I've also used the wheel carrier and tyre to climb up to the roof rack ............ and fallen off it. Now I have a ladder on the tailgate. ;)

Have you consider the Frontrunner Spare Wheel Carrier ?

It doesn't block rear lights and looks very neat too. The locking mechanism is probably not a s strong as the Outback Carrier, but it does the job very well, as long as you keep checking and tightening the bar attachment points after a rough track - learnt the hard way after the Cape trip :(.
Still would recommend it, but just need to maintain like anything I suppose.

I installed the Rijidij Carrier a few weeks ago on my 2012 D4.

Very solid, great locking mechanism at the closed and open positions, also does not cover the RHS brake light.

I've disabled the rear parking sensors for now, but plan to play around with getting some working. Wife finds it easy to use too :)

Only criticism is that the wheel moves a little on rough roads, maybe I am expecting too much? Its not much movement. The template provided for the hole in the rear plastic bumper was a little off too actually, nothing you can see though.

Mulgo site has some good photos:

I have the Frontrunner as it doesn't block the tail light. One thing I do with mine is take it off while driving around the city so I don't have to open two things every time I want to get in the back of the car. I have a repair kit if needed or I use my phone.

I have the Frontrunner which I fitted 2 or 3 years ago. No blocking of lights and very simple to use. Never had to tighten anything on it despite a few big trips.. Haveing said that maybe I'd better have a check anyway!
I think they have an updated model which is similar to the 4x4 intelligence one of a few years ago.
I am very happy with mine and I like its simplicity.

I've recently purchased a used D4 that came with an Outback Accessories RWC.

Its a very sturdy and effective RWC, but my previous D3 had the spare underneath and I'm finding that having the wheel mounted on the back for day-to-day use is somewhat restrictive.

- Opening the tailgate is not as quick
- The parking sensors are not reliable making parking less certain.

Is the OA RWC removable in such a way as it can be fairly quickly re-installed for trips and so on, but removed to make day-to-day operation around town easier?

Yep pop the metal cap off you can see on the end of the arm under the tail lights , undo and remove the crown nut and lift the carrier off. You will see the stub shaft should remain . Just be wary of the bearing that sits under the crown nut.

I don't have that brand but same concept.

Does anybody lock the handle in place for corrugated roads? I see a slot for an R clip or similar but mine didn't come with one.

I've never locked the handle on mine, and it has never come undone on any type of road surfaces. ;)

Have forgotten to close the handle properly a couple of times though - the strut will hold the wheel in place .................................................. ...... until you go round a corner. :o
