G'Day All,

Has anyone got any feed back on the canvas seat covers made by Melvill & Moon? A set of 4 (2 front and 2 rear) for approx $550 plus shipping.

Does anyone in Oz make them to fit the 2014 Defender front and rear seats.?

I desperately need seat covers or my 8 year old and his friends will trash my seats real quick.....

Cheers,

Phill.

Are you referring to a defender 90 or a 110?

melvill and moons are the best looking/fitting covers I have seen.

I did find the durability not unreal. Both front seat bases tore at 3 years... and I paid almost $900 incl shipping (which was about 50% from SA) delivered for front and back of a 110.

Assuming you have a 90.

Yeah they do the job. Have two kids and they definitely save the seats. They have light water proofing but you can maybe reapply a 3M water proof spray if you live at the beach or kids are getting in wet frequently- maybe that why my fronts ripped? salt water...

Anyway, $550 for all four seats... great deal. you won't regret it.

No one supplies them in AUS, fitting them is fiddly but easy enough.

You can buy the escape covers in Australia but be prepared to wait. Actually I won't go into that story.

Well I have just moved mine from my now deceased 2007 110 to my 2014 130, they are still going strong. The back pockets are sagging a little, but that's thanks to my partner filling them with useless heavy **** that should never have been put in there.

Dullbird,

You should be ashamed of yourself!!!! :p There is no such thing as a deceased Defender. It may be hospiltalised. In need of a heart transplant, or gearbox overhaul, but it is not deceased. Crippled perhaps.... Probably.... Disabled at best.... In need of a serious rebuild.....
:D:D

Incidentally, Lou, the seat covers in the Disco are still going strong. (As is the rest of the vehicle )

I paid around $40 for a pair of black canvas seat covers from supercrap to go on my $4000 Scheel-Mann seats :D (I figured as long as they protect the seats they can be disposable).

So far they are over 12 months old and holding up. They are quite a reasonable fit. I get a persistent crease in the drivers base - caused by getting in and out. when I clean them I will do something about it...

I've 'borrowed', until I can afford some new ones, the seat base covers from my 98 (needs some tlc) Defender. They are Black Duck, 13 years old lived most of their life in the desert and now worn to a beautiful soft tan, oh so lovely to the touch! ...but the seat backs are too short for the new Deefer seats!

Looking at Black Duck again but they seem to have changed to a more poly-canvas than before...and pricey! Hmm. Looking also at Melville and Moon which look to be a very heavy cotton canvas (any first hand advice appreciated).

+1 for Black Duck, very happy with the fit. Pricey but high quality.

I have Melville and Moon, eight years old and going well, no rips or tears, faded but that's ok, I would rate MSA just as good.

I had a set of black duck covers (front and back) in my old GQ Nissan Pootrol and they were very durable. They weren't the perfect fit, but only had minimal creasing and they held up very well to a lot of punishment.

My 2014 Defender 110 wears a full set of front and back "escape" seat covers. They fit perfectly, look great and are very sturdy. Added bonus was that they are extremely easy to fit. I didn't have to wait at all for mine. I called, they were in stock and I had them very soon after. I guess I was lucky.

Whatever brand you go for, canvas is a good solid product that will save your seats from any number of indiscretions. In my opinion they are a worthy investment. Good luck with your choice :)

I've tried most brands in my Utes and trucks, I don't like the feel of the black duck/canvas style seats in the cold weather we get down here, I've had an excellent run with Ruffnuts seat covers, they are custom made to suit each vehicle and I've even got my business logo embroided on the headrests..some sets are 10+ years old and have held up very well. I think they are still based out of Forbes, NSW and have a good reputation in the trucking and agricultural industry's.

Hello everyone,

Thanks for all your feedback. It is greatly appreciated.

I have now ordered a set of seat covers from Melville & Moon ,South Africa, in 100% cotton. Nobody else does the same quality covers for a 90, AND do the rear jump seats too. Not one company listed, besides them, makes covers for the jump seats in a 90. That was a disapointing discovery. :(

There is some good news. :)
Black duck will make paterns for the 90 jump seats IF they get enough enquiries for them. All it takes is an email saying you want some but know they don't make them. If you don't do it, then there is no reason to complain that they aren't made in Oz. I know this because I made enquiries.

Please make the enquiry.

Thanks. :)

Phill.

I bought new squabs (foam for the base) and my local motor trimmer (Darrin from Auto Trim in Murrurundi, NSW) fitted them with canvas covers directly over the foam for $130 each, as well as modifying the rivers side foam, making it a little longer for my thighs.

We'll do the seat backs one day too. (I have new Exmoor Trim foams for there too)

Well done. Post some pics. I was just about to tell you that.

I have had the 7 seater 110, and nobody could do the rear jump seats apart from M&M or Escape.

Also, a friend had a Sth African visiting on the w/e, he saw the covers etc. I told him my M&M ripped, but probably due to salt water etc etc- anyway he was 99% sure they would have replaced them FOC. Too late but good to know.

You'll have a small amount of grief with the front seat bottoms- you won't be able to work out why- eventually the bases go in properly and then everything will be fine in the future. Persevere. I think it's just the thickness of the canvas at the back pushing the base forward that hinders the cross pun falling into the two grooves.

Just noticed if you order 3 of the same product on the Melville & Moon website, international shipping is free.

I am looking for a 7 seater set in Sand color for my 2015 defender. If anyone else in the Perth WA region is interested we can but a order together to save on shipping.

This reduces cost from $770 AUD down to $480 AUD.....Great deal.

:)
Send me a note if interested.

Be careful you don't get stung with import duties as the combined value will exceed the threshold...

I don't. Some 'friends' tell me that they 'underquote' the cost of items when shipping internationally, to avoid paying excess duty though.
I of course, in no way condone this appalling behavior. I only pass it along for educational purposes.

Yeah, anything with a goods value of over $1000, and then you pay duty and GST on the total price (including the shipping).

Import by post or mail (http://www.border.gov.au/Busi/Impo/Impo)

Hey folks I'm in VIC and up for a set for a 5 seat 110

I think duty charges are around 15% but still worth it I guess with free shipping

I'd be happy in the interest of supporting Aussie manufacturing with a bulk buy from black duck too ..(.and I'm a South African expat )

It would be good to do a real price comparison... Has anyone one done this? Otherwise will do it tomorrow if I have time.

I've had Black Duck on my 98 Deefer for 15 years, just got first tear last week, so they're tough.

black duck from Miller Canvas are $618 for front & rear and Andrew said he could do free shipping for Aulro (saves $18) ok so not an amazingly incredible bulk buy deal but their prices are already sharp

I checked out the black duck at ARB recently and do like the quality of the stuff - it's hardy and a little loose on the seat but that's their style. the black I though would be good because they do get grubby eventually

have emailed melvill and moon to ask about free international shipping - without it they're probably 50% more than the ducks and if so then it's ducks for me

My dad has had his black duck covers in his longreach for over 10 years and they are still not really worn out just a bit faded.
Ive got them in my 90 for the front seats (i dont have rear seats) inc headrests, they are excellent quality and and perfect fit.

well I've tried a few times and not getting a response from melvill and moon and thus at this stage keen on snapping up some ducks from the local opposite lock at $620 a set.

If anybody else recons that's a sweet enough deal to move on I can order a few for others. This is the one in Bendigo and I guess they can post them out or otherwise you can pick them up from me in Castlemaine or in Nth Fitz
