Look after all their vehicles, I mean. There are lots on here who have heaps of vehicle they are working on or have restored. How do you find time to do it? I currently only have one driveable land rover and even tho I am semi retired and currently only work 5 days a month I really struggle to find enough time to work on getting this vehicle (a perentie 6X6) to the standard I want to get it to. Sure I do other stuff like yard work, domestic duties like washing/cleaning, ironing/cooking/house work, looking after myself (with a few refreshments sometimes - like tonight) and rebuilding the occasional LT95 or diff. I have spent a lot of time on the perentie as it needed lots of TLC but at last I am starting to get to the stage where from now I can just poke along and do a few update jobs now and then. I really take my hat off to the people who have spent so much time restoring vehicle after vehicle - how do you do it?

I take my hat off to you.

I just don't get time or the energy to do as much as I'd like. So in theory I've gone to a lower maintenance Landy. About all I can do with this one is wash it and drive it.

sometimes people outsource things like engine and gearbox overhauls.

I used to go and help out with some restoration work, things like engine bolt ups and gearbox installs. wiring work, the odd suspension setup...

its all about getting mates involved over beers and BBQ's whats big and daunting for one bloke is always easier when the mechanics lubricant flows just right.

If you cant find time in semi retirement then there is something wrong :o.

I know how you feel Bearman. It took me a week to install a BASS remap, a job that can be done in a couple of hours. When you only have one vehicle You get few moments long enough to immobilise it and do what you need to do.
Cheers, Billy

I know it sounds crazy but I seem to have less time now to do things than when I was working full time. Maybe I have just slowed down that much but it doesn't seem like it. Not that I mind it though. The time passes quicker!!

I know what you are saying Dave, and it used to be that way years ago for me but nowadays there doesn't seem to be many old farts like me around this area who still muck about with land rovers. Most of the blokes I know are into golf and stuff like that which doesn't interest me in the slightest. I would rather be in the shed inspecting a dismantled box or wondering how I am going to rebuild a diff with a ATB and hi tough axles etc etc or where I am going to stash the latest lot of bits I have acquired and wondering how I am going to be ready to do my prospecting trip to WA next year or get the boat out for a reef trip. It's been a while since Topcat was out of the shed.

I hear you Brian.
Stuff just doesnt get done here:(:(:(:(:(
At least buying a new one, washing and sheding it are the biggest tasks.
However,99% finished camper trailer in shed, hard to find time/motorvation to finish it.There are also LOTS of handyman jobs needing doing around the house I turn a blind eye to until I get pestered too much to ignore:):):):):)
I spend a lot of time in my vegie garden, probably 3 hours a day minimum on weekends and days off.I get alot of inner peace and fulfilment from that.
Love working on the camper trailer, but its always on my mind that 2 days in the shed is 2 weeks hell on my back unfortunately, even using jigs.benches to keep everything at a comfortable height.
My vegie garden is all raised,900mm high, and its bigger than most modern city backyards;););););) Love it:cool::cool::cool::cool::cool:

The vegie garden has always been one of my passions also Andy, but with the drought and etc etc I haven't done anything with it in the last 2 years. Love growing fresh lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, peas/beans etc in the winter. As you say it gives you time to think about things and have some inner peace - bit like sitting around the campfire watching a log burn and talking dribble with a mate or two out camping.

Brian I hear you. I have a very demanding job that doesn't pay overtime (I will be working all weekend). I stubbornly refuse to pay mechanics for work I can do myself, but only have 2 out of 3 landies on the road (for a long time and was down to 1 at some stage). The boat still need more fitting out and I recently bought a ford 6610 for the property which will also need work sooner rather than later...

One of the landies that is going needs a broken window regulator and broken door lock fixed...

Its a long slog, prepping to be a grey nomad. I'm a shift worker and can take redundancy any time in the next 2 years. So every day off (like yesterday) is a day to do a bit more (installed civvy tow bar on the FFR). I take my time and do it right. Feels a little bit like Andy Dupree from Shawshank. Just gotta keep on going.

No that is something I do she is far too clumsy to do that job :D
I do actually wash the dishes some times, normally she does them, but cleaning she does when in my opinion the house is still super clean and tidy. How can you clean and tidy up when everything is spotless and in order? Only my missus..

That's probably got something to do with it Carzee. Like you I definitely take my time when doing jobs.

Too late.I dobbed you in on another thread. Actually the Kids can't understand why I won't let them wash mine. I wouldn't stop my Missus if she wanted to clean and tidy up, but she always wants to get me involved.

I've got nothing to offer. The Defender has sat covered now for more than 10 months.
I've bought a few bits and bobs for it. I just need 1 week hard at it or 2 lazy ones and it is finished but.. house reno which went out of control thanks to disorganized tradies and family needs which just pop up, then work demands,

Sometimes it just doesn't work out.
We recently helped the in laws move into retirement living. So many unfinished projects..Just made me sad and I set about clearing out anything that I couldn't see completed within the next 12 months with the exception of an old 47 bike.

Just found your thread! I work 3 days a week. I try to get out to the shed heaps but money has been slowing me down of late :( I've got the 88inch that needs finishing (new gearbox & transfer). The No5 trailer is 1/2 camper sort of - that needs plenty of work. The house is 1/2 renovated. Yard is ok I guess, but the BBQ area has gotten tired and needs a revamp.

Just like most of you I guess, I hate paying someone to do something that I could do myself (even if it takes me 10x longer)!

Brian you do know someone who loves fooling around with Land Rovers but you don't call him and say "Hey Nick, whats happening? feel like coming and helping out?" I'm sure Nick would be happy to help, especially if he doesn't have to pay for parts :p

If I'm going to do something on a vehicle I like To have some "clear air" around the task. I'm horribly bad at managing my time though and the clear air thing doesn't happen all that often. So the diesel 88 sitting in the shed which I bought in Jan 2013 is much the same now as it was then. Other things just get in the way. Like the 109 which is registered and should be my daily(ish) drive has taken up a lot of my recent time. I have been tempted to start a thread on the Diesel - "The Restoration of Mutley" so that I'd embarrass myself into doing something, but that hasn't happened either. Oh dear! It'll get done at some point.
cheers,
D

I have time because I do it buy not buying junk to start with, too many people on this forum spent too much time worrying about going out in the bush and having problems instead of actually travelling.I don't buy old crap,I buy new vehicles, new camper, new kayak and use them,I spend my time doing what I want to do instead of slaving over a busted arsed Land Rover or fixing up old gear in the shed, buy once, spend the money on new gear and use it enjoying the outback, thats my advice. I know what you mean. I work fulltime, have meetings on 2 week nights and am involved in a house reno, so at the moment maintenance keeps me busy and big jobs only get done in the holidays. Family stuff is also a big commitment (sixth grandchild is due to emerge this week). I don't even have time for Landy club outings at the moment, which frustrates me. Hoping life will slow down by late next year. Fortunately, both the Defender and the Mazda have been utterly reliable so far.
