View Full Version : Drowned Td5 Disco. What to do next? Help!

I went out for a drive yesterday with a fellow Disco owner who unfortunately may have drowned his car. Its a D2 td5 auto which is now probably going to be a right off. We were in Toolangi and he was going through a rather large bog hole when all of a sudden his car stopped in the middle. He tried to crank it over but it just stopped. So we winched him out and assessed the damage. Hoping he hasn't bent a rod now
First signs were not good. His air box was full of water even though he has a snorkel. All his carpet is soaked and I would say his auto computer under the seat maybe as well. I had a look under the bonnet for him and found that the flexi pipe which joins to the air box wasn't sealed :o. And it had a big cut in the side of it. So easy enough for the water to enter his intake.
My question is, what can I do to see if it can still start? Do I just take the glow plugs out of it and turn it over? And hopefully any water blows out. Is there a certain procedure to follow? If so any help or tips would be great. He's a young cousin of mine so I'm hoping its not going to be major for him. But its not looking good.
Thanks
Chris

You should also pull the 5th injector as there are only 4 glow plugs. As you say, it doesn't look good. Emptying the water from the cylinders is the first step. The intercooler is also probably full of water, so take off the hose to the EGR as well, which should drain the inlet manifold.
I bent 2 rods in a 200TDi off the starter motor once.

Thanks Erich. I'm still learning my way around the td5 diesel engine. Always had the V8s :D The glow plugs I can do from the side is that correct? And to pull the 5th injector, do I take the rocker cover off to do it? The rest I can get him to start taking off.
Thanks

Yes rocker cover off Chris, if he needs a new donk Jollys self service wrecker only charge $276 for a td5 long motor - you remove it from vehicle.

Yes, this one is a bit awkward against the firewall, especially if it is tight and needs to be slide hammered out as they do sometimes.

Also don't try and start it until you've checked out the auto control box, as other AULRO ian's have trashed their autos through drowning this baby!

Yep you just remind me about that one. The auto transmission computer is under the front passenger seat isn't it? [emoji33] That would of definitely been under water I reckon! I think it's going to be a miracle if this thing starts again. I can't look it over until Saturday. Time will tell I guess.

Remove the battery until you can get to it so it doesent start any type of electrical corrosion inside any of the ecu's
Flushing out any electrical unit with fresh water and then air drying with compressed air and a heat gun will not damage electronic components. water conducts when power is on, no power no chemical reaction ..except for rust. so the quicker you get to it the more chance of saving it.

To restore and protect water ingressed electronics this Super Insulation Spray Nanoprotech Motors Mobiles Electric Appliance | eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Super-Insulation-Spray-NANOPROTECH-insulation-resistance-up-to-1000-/161879618356) is the best product ever, it will make a water repellent coating as well, even if you wait 3 weeks after the order it worths it's weight in gold and keep you on the safe side when wading... i used it in all the ECUs and exposed connectors and it's brilliant (i dont have shares in it no worries:cool:)

Well a bit of an update. I managed to get it running again:) Gave everything a good clean, took out the glow plugs, took out the auto computer and opened it up. It was full of mud and grit. Gave it a spray of contact cleaner and let it dry off. Put it all back together and crossed my fingers. After a few turn overs she fired up! I wasn't expecting that. :D
But that's not the end of the story. The M+S lights are flashing and it wont change into any gear. I left my nanocom at home so I didn't get to check any fault codes for him. If you put it in D it just does nothing and revs. But when you put it back into R there is a bit of a clunk sound. I'm thinking the transmission fluid might need to be changed after being under water for about 20 min or so. Or the XYZ switch might be playing up now. Hopefully his auto ECU is still ok.
At least the motor is still running fine. I'll post some pics later of the place where it was stuck.
Cheers
Chris

Good thing is, Trans ECU aren't to expensive to replace, around $100 dollar mark plus postage on Evilbay.
Outback 1 on this forum probably has 1 floating around

My guess is the XYZ switch on the side of the trans is full of water.

How come the Forum 'swear-filter' doesn't pick up on that one ?
- Surely xyz is a euphamism for a switch with drinking problems, loose morals and bad behaviour...:angel::angel:
