View Full Version : rebuilding a series

I'm thinking of finding and stripping a series SWB and modifying it on the build back up. Just wondering if anyone has seen this done before? I'm thinking of pretty much just keeping the body, and getting my hands on a SWB coil spring chassis, dropping a V8 into it and a drivetrain to suit.
what sort of hitches am I likely to run into, and how could I do this better?

G'day,
Dont like your chances of a SWB coil chassis in Aus!!!
from what I can see there are 2 ways of thinking:
1. Use a Rangie 100" and shorten to the desired length (even though best length is 100") then fabricate / transfer all the mounts and outriggers.
2. Get some coil spring hangers off a Rangie chassis, weld them on in place of the leaf springs mounts and run Rangie axels (also get bonus of disk brakes all around).
The first option is more involving - but more fun style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif , just ask there are a few around.

http://www.designa-chassis.co.uk/ can supply you with a galvanized chassis - approx $3000 landed in Oz.
Series body and a donor Rangie.......yes please style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

yeah, I was thinking of somehow using rangie axles anyway. How difficult a job would you say removing leaf mounts and welding coil mounts? I'm thinking of buying a suspension kit for it anyway, is there anyone that would sell the mounts, or perhaps I could get them fabricated somehow to achieve a perfect fit?
I wouldn't mind going with option 1 but I want to have as little fabricated as possible, ie original body, chassis and bulkhead. Just as long as it's off a rover of some sort. Also, I think the fact that this option would take more time, I'd be more likely to not finish the project.

Rangie 100" chassis / 3.6 litre Isuzu diesel / maxi axels / detroit locker / mix of Series 3 and D110 body - now has a shortend County roof also.
VERY good vehicle off road - as can be seen on our recent Watagans trip photos.
Only reason he is selling is his current project needs more money - Series 1 body on a Rangie 100" chassis!!!

Hi
I was sure that I'd seen a great page with photos of a series leaf to coil conversion.
Couldn't find a thing, don't know if it's gone or I just imagined it.
After spending waaay too much time on it I was converted to parabolic leafs and Teri Ann's teflon spring separators.
So, it may be of no use to you, but I couldn't stand to waste all of these interesting links.
