So we are sitting down after finishing the camp setup at the caravan park at the beach & ol mate from next campsite (with his Nissan navara with what look like 15in wheels & 100profile ats on) comes over for a bit of chat ... I ask if has he been down the beach yet ...answers no... then looks at my 20in's with the 255/50 scorpions and says and I wouldn't be taking that on the beach with those tyres.... Ka Ching instant approval from the treasurer for a set of goe 18's :) .
For the record 16psi and it just floated through the chopped up soft stuff ;)
Then we did an inland track at full pressure - soft stuff - never broke a sweat .... Meanwhile wife is panicking about tyre pressures... No dear I don't want to damage the tyres on these sticks & roots

Haha. Nice one, I wish mine was persuaded as easily.

Mine are coming at the end of the month. ish
Didn't actually get explicit approval but did get the nod for Simpson crossing next year so in my mind the wheels are necessary so bundled into the overall approval. That's logical isn't it? ;-)

That's logical isn't it? ;-)Its logical to try to get way with it. Anyway, forgiveness vs permission.

The ride comfort with the GOE 18" is soooo much nicer than the 19" on and off-road, still amazes me they put ridiculous wheels on this car

Hi sctsprin.
Is the extra ride comfort alone good enough to invest in GOE's? My wife hurts whenever we go over a speed hump for example, slow or fast or potholes. This may be a way to help dampen the effects of bumps.
I know it's a hard thing to quantify but would appreciate your viewpoint.

I recon if I changed the rims on the D4 SWMBO probably wouldn't even notice.:o
And she uses it all the time,as I have the work van.
In fact I may soon go back to the OEM 18" rims instead of the D3 rims and I bet she doesn't notice.
As for the bank balance, that would get noticed.
17" rims with p rated tyres would be the most comfortable if they will fit,as I don't know what vehicle you have.

As has been said many, many times before,WTF were they thinking.
Hopefully the D5 has this issue sorted.

Hi Martin
That's a tough one
I have the 265/65r18 BFG ko2, so they have more sidewall, but they're E rated, but they're about 50% better in my opinion than the 19" with 255/55r19 XL rated tyres over potholes and bumps
I reckon 31.5" in P rated would be a lot more comfortable
Cheers
James

I doubt the brakes on the D5 will get smaller. I understand the increase braking capacity is significantly to do this enhancing the TR system. I was surprised the new Disco Sport still takes a 17" rim. I thought LR would have increased brake capacity there too for the same reason. Maybe they will do that on later models.

As for the D5,a lighter vehicle, better brake technology, listening to customers, you never know.:)
Hmm,maybe I am dreaming......

Sorry mate, the new RRS dropped nearly 400kg and has big brakes.

Ok,for the experts,I wonder what size the rims on this are?(bottom pic)
And if you look really carefully there seems to be a large gap between front calliper and the rims, but difficult to see for certain.
Maybe 18"?

Hi Letherm,
Talk to Graeme. IIRC his wife has an injured back, such that he replaced his D4 suspension with D3 (and obtained engineering approval).
Best Wishes,
Peter

On my now-gone MY10 D4 I discarded the original shocks at 30K, wore out genuine D3 shocks (65K and much softer ride) and after-market D3 shocks (45K) then went back to genuine 2012+ D4 shocks (not as harsh as the originals) all whilst using 17" rims with the last set of tyres P-rated. I gave-up with fixed valving shocks and bought a 2012 Vogue to get ecu-controlled shocks (CVDs). The Vogue's original 20" tyres were quickly replaced with oversize 20" tyres for a softer ride AND more reliable sidewalls and now my wife can travel many hours compared with only a couple previously.

Us D4 drivers are quite spoiled when it comes to ride quality. I test drove an Audi SQ5 on 20 inch wheels some time ago. Wow, what a horrible ride. Hitting a speed hump in the Disco afterwards (also on 20s) after felt like hitting a bird in a 747. The handling, of course, is another story. I can't even fathom how cushy the D4 must be on 18s.

Exactly, mate of mine has an Audi wagon,I think it is a Q5 or maybe Q7,has the 4.2 TDV8 and EAS.Goes well, but as said the ride is shocking.
Whenever he gets in the D4 he can't believe how good the ride is.The difference is unbelievable.

I have found with the 60 profile 255 tyres, the ride is a little bit softer, but only a little bit. Also, less air should soften that too. A 65 profile moreso I presume.
I know someone who broke his back, and he bought a new VX Landcruiser, which has electric leather seats, etc. He replaced the seats with alternate ones, for his back.
Truck seats have adjustable shock absorbers, to soften the ride especially when a truck which is not a semi, has no load. Bus drivers also have shock absorber seats - they seem to move.
I don't know if you can get such a seat into a Disco.
But you can get an air cushion for vehicles, and they do soften things a lot I think.
Here is a link - the cushions cost around $200. Maybe worth a shot.
A whole seat might be better, but I don't know about availability.
Here's a link on a quick search I did:
