View Full Version : Manual Locking Issue

Why worry about manually locking the vehicle you ask?
Well because
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/180808-i-really-need-help-central-locking-alarm-key-fobs-etc-etc-3.html#post2437368
I still am not able to lock using the vehicle with the remotes and my invitation to go back to the dealer's is not until 30 Nov. :(
I have used numerous processes to manually lock the vehicle but they all revolve around locking using the button on the dash and all door locks always activate correctly.
Whichever of the front doors that is is open to do this is then shut.
On every occasion the passengers door remains locked. On most occasions when the handle is used on the outside of the drivers door it opens. Very occasionally it will remain locked.
I assumed (initially) that the reason it was not locking is because it was unlocked when the remotes 'lost contact' when the starter battery died and was replaced. However it has began locking occasionally now.
Anybody got any suggestions on why this is?

I've always thought manual locking was using the key in the passenger door lock. I've never tried the method you've used.

That will only lock the passenger door (the one with the key in).
The use of the key in the door is supposedly the 'emergency unlock' feature however it would be good to know if others have the same thing happen when using my method.

I'm not sure what your fault is? There is a known fault with the door module on some vehicles that prevents it from locking and unlocking. On mine the only way to let someone into the front passenger side was to open it from the inside handle, otherwise it stayed locked no matter what, except for the odd time that it decided to work, you know a intermittent fault.
Then it would not lock with the remote at times unless I double locked it, have you tried pressing the lock button twice? That usually worked for locking it..
End of the day the lock actuator needed fixing / replacing, not a fun job if your to do it yourself as I did.

It may be the actuator on the drivers door but I am not sure, because if I sit in the drivers seat and push the lock button on the dash then the lock button/tab on the drivers door activates and I can hear the actuator within the door activate also.
It's just that it only truly locks the door intermittently so that it can not be opened from the outside.

OK, I only used that method when the car was in transit mode & assumed it would operate with the other doors once with the customer.

I was getting the same sort of thing early on then after a while if the door didn't lock properly I would get a chirp from the horn and the mirrors wouldn't fold. but all the other doors were locked.
Interestingly after dis-assembly and cleaning it didn't improve immediately, it waited for me to order and pay for a new actuator, that now is sitting on the shelf.

Sorry if it sounded like I was not interested in your comment Ken. My thought has been that the issue is an electrical one due to the concurrent issue of the remote fobs not working.
However after thinking more about it and reading numerous posts in numerous threads regarding the actuator, I have decided that checking this will be tomorrow's job.
That actuator you have may find a home in a D3 door yet...

Good luck and expect to lose some skin, the little tabs that retain the cables are a pain to put it mildly. There must be some sort of fork tool to release them and make it easier but in the end I managed with a screw driver..

Didn't lose any skin but due to the humidity did raise quite a sweat.
Wasn't game to pull up on the trim too much so only managed to get it open enough to remove the cable from the trim and paly around with it.
However was able to determine that the actuator is the problem. Operates but does not 'lock' in the locked position.
Thanks for pointing that out Ken - my inoperative remotes made me think it was electrically related rather than a mechanical fault as it is.
Roversmith (who has just moved in 10 houses down) called in and gave me a tip on the trim removal so I may have a go at that again tomorrow afternoon. Otherwise I'll book it in to get changed ASAP.

which now means that we can actually lock the vehicle now. :)
