Whoahhh - that's beast! Surely a camper conversion is better than a tipper :D

We've got auto box MB prime movers. The gearboxes in them are crap.
Hope yours has been serviced religiously.

It's only got 29k on it, so as new.. The box works well once I worked out what was in it.. Was sold as an auto but it's the 16 speed semi-auto with a clutch.. The truck is one seriously heavy duty unit.. I've never seen prop shafts so massive!

Might I enquire as to what you paid for it? PM if not for general knowledge.
Tks

I paid $90k for it, looking at about $125k set up with the tipper and on road. There's a few of these spec trucks around, mainly with trays and cranes or drill rigs. I've been looking for about 6 months and most in this condition are selling for around $140-200k, mainly MAN, DAF, Merc and Tartra, all from drilling support and exploration company's. As we do a lot of national parks and forestry work, I'm taking a punt that the ability to get 14-16tons of material into steep terrain for firetrail work will be a big bonus. Plus it's use where we can't get a truck and dogs into jobs.

Cheers for the info. It'll be interesting seeing it once you have it kitted out. Also interested in how far it will go. I'd guess the tyre size will be a limiting factor.. Any changes there or just set it up and see how it goes?

We just had our prime mover gearbox re-built,it has the same box,not quite 200000km.
Went to MB in Perth with an issue where the computer generated clunk to tell the driver the gear was selected and changed sounded then when using the clutch pedal the gear rejected sound would go.One would then need to find a lower gear as momentum was lost, especially in hilly terrain.
They guessed at a worn syncro on that gear. When opened up they found water contamination and several worn syncros/bearings.Repair bill was almost $40000!!!!
Get yours checked/oil changed and oil sampled at the next service. As they use synthetic oils the service intervals are big so this sort of issue can happen.

Thanks Andrew, I pulled the tray off today and it's gone straight to the body builders to start on the tipper. I will be changing all fluids and oils once I get it back, it will be going to Mercedes to get some faults checked and codes cleared.

We have a WA AULROian Merc Brainstrust. He is the Parts manager at Daimler trucks in Perth.
Im sure he can help you out with anything you may need to know,he knows more about these trucks than the service dpt;););););)

After a bit of a wait, the tipper on the Actros is finished and the result is very impressive, it's big..very big, but the body builders have done a great job with the build quality. It's back at Mercedes because the new PTO won't talk to the computer and engage, other than that, rego and it should be put straight to work to see what it can do.
