Hi Guys
My main hobby other than Landies is growing my own vegies.
The hobby developed after working on a BIG market garden,at the time it was the second biggest in the world and the biggest in the southern hemisphere.Over 700 acres of vegies under irrigation.
The chemicals and fertiliser poured onto the crops was scandalous!!!!!
My missus is a vegitarian so most of our meals are vegetarian.
Im not anti chemical/fertilisers and do use them when needed, but instead use composting worms mulch and animal manures instead.
My vegie garden/orchard is aprox 12m x 20m,the orchard is enclosed with bird netting and has chooks and is watered by the house grey water.I basically grow all vegies that are in season at the time,it saves a fortune on bought ones plus homegrown fresh is much tastier.I grow chillies, mainly Jalapenos and Serranos, the missus pickles the Jalapenos and makes chilli sauces to sell at markets.Pickled Jalapenos are to die for!!!!! CAN SELL A JAR TO ANY OF YOU CHILLI FANS,you will get addicted!!!!!
I have just bought 15 Kallamata olive trees to grow up the side of the block, will be running them on a trellis espallier style to create a "green" fence that we can harvest pickle and sell.
THE VEGIE GARDEN IS AS GOOD AT TIME CONSUMPTION AS A LANDY style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

Oh to have space. We have to get out of Fitzroy.
At the moment the best we can muster is 6m square of vege patch. But it has yielded some delicious beans, snow peas, spinach, AND chillis.
My Ma has 2 acres in Trentham and we are hoping to hijack some space in the vege patch she is planning. It should be about the size of a tennis court. Then we'll have it all - home brew, home grown veges, and wild game meat. Must buy an Alka-Seltzer tree too...

We hoped to tame some of our block for a vegi patch. Need to chainsaw half the place first. Our place is an ex breeding stock for horticulturalists and was one of the best show gardens in the region before the previous owners neglected it for years. Everytime I rip out a dead plant i find heaps more behind it. What would you recommend growing in the septic run of area???

Hi George
You could try tomatoes,but they probably would have to much BODY in them style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif
You shouldnt grow vegies in septic waste, too much risk from pathogens in the poos.Fruit trees should be OK.

Chemicals have their place in Agriculture and Horticulture but all over use does is create resistance, so when you use them it has no effect. Using organic methods is far better for you and your garden, and your wallet. Good work LA. Stacey and I plan to get a small market garden going here, when we have the time and the money, the only problem with living here is the selection of things you can grow, frost is a nasty thing when it comes to crop selection. Hi Ace
Frost only kills stuff that dont like it,a few weeks back we had 3 weeks of minus 3,OK it sorted my chillis and capsicums out, which were under plastic, burnt the potatoe tops, wich are now re-shooting.UNAFFECTED VEGIES that are still hapilly growing at the moment are Brocolli,Cauli,Cabbage,Chinese Cabbage,Pak Choi,Lettuce(both leaf and hearting),Garlic,Onions,Peas,Broad Beans,Rhubarb,Beetroot,Silverbeet, and Parsley.
In the next few days I will be sowing spring vegie seeds in my hothouse.Tomatoes, chillis, capsicum,Zucchini,Corn etc.We still will get frosts for the next 6 to 8 weeks but they are fairly safe in the hothouse.
Cant wait for my asparagus to start growing, its dormant at the moment, but will shoot soon as the ground temp starts rising.Love asparagus, raw boiled or pickled YUM YUM YUM.

Yeah, i have a few of those growing at school at the moment, Stacey and are are debating as to how long we will be here for as we are planning a move in the next couple of years, dont ask me where to, so we havent forked out the dollars to set it up as we need a good fence to keep the rabbits out. I am still getting the hang of what to plant where. Growing the vegies at school has tought me a bit. Dad did all the vege growing when we were kids, i never really got into it. Matt

Stacey wont move to Melbourne cause her mum lives there, to say they dont get on is an understatment. She also heard a story about it being cold there, dont know where she heard that. Sorry hiline, I tried.

Stacey says you can cry all you like, she still aint moving to melbourne. She said to say, she weighed up, Melbourne or Coffs and to say it nicely melbourne gets a HELL NO!!!!!. I actually dont mind melbourne, i really loved it when i visited. But we need to stay in NSW, because if i go to another state i effectively quit teaching in and start all over again. We might move tp southern NSW or the Riverina, that way we will only be half a days drive away. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif Matt

Ok, to get this back on track.
Stacey and I are about to get a market garden type set up going. We are going to plant out the whole side paddock next to the house with various vegetables suitable to the area. Is there any advice or suggestions anyone can give to make things better/easier etc? Matt

Hi all
Two gardens
1 - the warehouse where we live, no outdoors, I'm thinking of growing vine tomatoes across the roof. Sort of a vampire bat espalier.
2 - 250 acres of trees in Windeyer. I need to do a little pruning. I have to cut a fire break/trail along the boundary fenceline. I'm reckoning it's about 8km by 8m wide. Anybody care to guess how many trees that is? and I'm a greenie.
Cheers
Simon
