I have over a period of time built up a collection of some crazy things and still currently collect them.
Most I have collected while four wheel driving where I guess I picked up the first ones and now get them given to me as well as buying on ebay.
First: number plates I have hundreds, 80% Aussie, the rest USA & Canada. Find them on the tracks, abondoned cars, old hay sheds on farms on old cars some are worth up to $150 (Metters enamaled B & W plate about 1930's)
Second: Axes....anything from full size 5lb axe, Kelly, Plumb, Hytest, Herd, Victory etc to tomahawks/ hatchets, the dearest was a Kelly I bought from USA for $100, I know have a few of them.
Third: Hand Saws...two handed pit saws to very old bow saws - must be old.
Fourth: Insulators.....ceramic of any telegraph or phone pole I can climb, knock down, buy or do a deal.
Base Ball Caps: I've got hundreds mostly from places I've been inoutback or OS, I have 14 different Land Rover ones.
Stubby Holders:....my count exceeds 100 again from towns I've visited in Aussie outback.
Bric a Brac:...anything old, branding irons, horse gear, old black smith tools, cigarette tins.
Land Rover Models...diecast models any Landie I can pick up ebay, antique shops etc.
Knives, Bayonets, Machete's...military or good quality pocket & skinning knives, I've got dozens.
These are the main groups that I concentrate on there are others though, these keep me broke enough.
I've got them hanging on walls, from the exposed beam ceiling and on shelves in one room 35x16x12 feet.

I am trying to break my habits of collecting things. Guns are the main problem - they keep following me home from work. Old quality riflescopes too.

We all collect don't we!
I can't help myself I like collecting ammunition. The older and rarer the better.
Guns well when times were good and variety was plentyful I had a good collection of millitary self loaders, I think I got up to about 35, but then times went bad, the health system in Tasmania failed and a lunatic made the news. So made a lot of money on the buyback and bought more.
Its a good topic to broach at a mixed idealogical function. ( I like bigwords) Your average intelligent person can't give a valid reason why they don't like firearms, over the years I have worked out, primarily its because of fear, people are scared of the bang and it might hurt them, my son (13) doesn't like firing my 12g actually won't or any of my larger calibres , because he thinks it will knock him on his bum. But when he has his .22 and a couple of boxes of ammo, he will happly fire it all day.

Dunna need one Capt'n. I got a 45/70!
JohnE:
I know exactly what you mean. The best way of arguing it is ask a rabid anti person when was the last time that they were directly effected by inadequacies in the health system - most people have some experience. Then ask them when they were last effected by violent crime - few people have any experience. Then ask when they were last effected by related crime. Ask them when was the last time they actually SAW a firearm that was not carried by a cop or security guard. Statistically speaking, it is a non issue for the gross populace, so spending the amount that has been spent is a misappropriation of public funds.
But we are getting off topic here, and people might actually catch on to what really happens so I'd better crawl back into the cave...

Well well what can I say Mr Mac, you are indeed a wordsmith. very well said.
Interesting that some of you have got those big left over from the century before last calibres. Aside from mod 94 and mod 336 30/30's that is the closest I've got to the old yank calibres. A 45/70 is a very impressive cartridge. However reloading if you stick with the old blackpowder scale, the 70, you wouldn't get too many refills per kg. I suppose thats why in the western movies, they always had a barell of powder and not a piddly little tin.
This is fun Vlad, a subject that is not broken, leaking oil, getting charged ridiculous prices for and can't get the parts.

The Marlin 1895 that I have is a fantastic little rig. Compact, handy, accurate enough for work to 100m on bigger beasties, and phenomenally potent. I load using smokeless powder and either hardcast lead (my own or Hawkesbury River) or Remington 405gn JSPs. Both are accurate, and the load I use is very comfortable to shoot at an estimated 1400fps. You can load them up to nearly 2000fps with smokeless powders, but having nearly scored a concussion it was a once only experience for me.

I am collecting stubby coolers but only have a few dozen at the moment... slowly but surely.
I am interested in ex-mil rifles - having a Savage built Lee Enfield .303 at the moment but lusting after a good Mosin Nagant.
Intend to build up a collection behind Mrs Vlad's back
Just put a deposit on a Lee Reloading press yesterday with the money she gave me for my birthday !!
I reckon I'd be interested in those bayonets too, RoverOne. You haven't got one of those early .303 ones with the curved quillion perchance ?

I'm a collector of McFarlane Toys, which are highly detailed action figures. You might have seen Spawn before on the shelves, but I also collect a series called "Movie Maniacs". They feature figures of movie characters - for example I have Alien, Predator, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre figures.
I really enjoyed action figures as a kid. I had He-man, Batman and the original star wars figures (kicking myself now that I broke them out of their sealed container). I'm re-living my childhood in a way, but have not opened the boxes and have preserved them in a proper storage cabinet, in hopes that they may have value one day.
Over time I got a little bored with the usual figures, until I got interested in the Horror figures (being a horror buff who also collects horror/sci fi DVD's), in which I located a series which was very different, and usually makes people a little sick when they see them.
For anyone thats interested in these figures and many more - visit: www.spawn.com

I've got one stubby holder that I collected in 1986 from the 40th Anniversary of my first employer, the Overseas Telecommunications Commission (OTC). I was with them for 37 years before taking redundancy.
I do have a collection of Land Rover models (that includes RR and Freelander) and Jaguar models. The Jag models may be sold in the near future. I wish I'd kept all the cardboard boxes.

Hey guys - yeah I will attempt in a minute to post a photo.
Its of Australian origin due to the obvious "Australian Police" markings.
I have shown it to a few patch collectors, who have all told me that they have never seen it before, and seeing that they cannot identify it - it must a fake apparently!
I have a suspicion that it might belong to a police service serving overseas (eg Timor) and they may have designed a patch to identify the Australian Police Services generally.
But at this stage.... still no confirmation.
Hope someone can assist.

Let me know what you think???

Not being a patch expert
by the look of it, it appears to be based on an AFP badge, similar colour etc.
Was probably made up privately for one of those overseas deployments, as you suggest may have been timor or the islands. Possibly the islands as i think Timor was done under the auspices of the Un and they had there own patch.
I'll give a mate who went to east timor a yell and see if he is familiar with it, when I work out how to put this on an email.

Thanks John - you're a legend. Yeah I haven't had much luck as I have said before. I'm not a real fanatical patch collector, but a few patches have caught my eyes - mainly police patches. This patch in particular caught my attention as I didn't recognise it, but thought that it might have some significance.

Mate thats not a problem, I don;t know about the legend bit, this is more fun that trying to work out why , you name it some landrover problem.
I have a couple of other friends that are heavily into patches as well. But yours I am guessing is a limited run. So Lex would be the best bet. I'll let you know when he gets back to me.

"you name it some landrover problem"?? What did you mean by that?
JohnE
15th August 2005, 07:00 AM
Sorry about that I left out a comma, I meant trying to sort out the patch was easier than trying to work out any problem involved with landrovers( does that make sense)
Anyway, my mate lex got back to me, all he said was the patch is for overseas service, had not seen one in east Timor, is not an Australian/UN patch.
This makes me think it may have been a privately made one as opposed to issue. I think the AFP used their own patch in the Solomons.
My other patch collecting mate, had nver seen one before but wouldn't mind being able to get his hands on it.
Thats about the best I could do.If I find out any more I'll let you know.

Well mate thats more than I know about it at the moment anyways. I had always had an idea that it might be something like you mentioned. I have had a look around at a few websites, but nothing comes close to matching it. The closest was a Commonwealth police patch that the coat of arms was very similar in design, but didn't mention "Australian Police". I'm not really concerned if its a fake. Half the fun is looking into it anyways style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif
Definately good experience!

mate i wouldn't put it in the category of fake, i think it is probably one that was made up, possibly by a fed doing a stint O/S .
I have a patch on my shooting jacket that I bought in Calgary in 97 when I was competing in the World Police and Fire Games, it reads 'Team Australia,Calgary 97, in Green and gold and a couple of figures in the middle. I bought it from a patchseller over there, they had been made up for every visiting country. And as far as i know I have the only one in the country.
I have a couple of other mates I can try for you, just have to dig up their emaills.

I got an email back from a website. The gentleman's comments were as follows:
"My opinion (OPINION not knowledge) is that it is genuine but not official.
After all, why make a fake patch that no one can identify? No market for unidentifiable patches.
The quality of the embroidery work says not official and probably not Australian manufacture.
The use of the Australian Coat of Arms indicates that the patch has at least some official recognition at some level and that indicates Australian Federal Police.
Possibly made for off duty wear or what the Army would call "barracks dress"."
Interesting idea. The quest continues.....
