View Full Version : Turbo Drain Pipe

Had the disco up on the hoist last week, just looking around and I notice a black line on what looks to be a y-piece joining three breather tubes on the starter motor. Wipe with the finger and find it's oil. Looking at what is directly above and see more shiny oil on something that looks like a hose fitting or clamp. Thinking the 'something' (hard to see with the torch I had) may be a turbo and not liking an oil leak at all, I booked it in to get checked out.
Turbo Drain Pipe is reported as the cause.
Sump cover was removed, inspected and secured the drain pipe screws, secured the turbo clamp and booked in for re-inspection in three weeks with customer to monitor.
I thought they had fixed the turbo oil trouble of a few years back. Is this possibly related or different altogether and hopefully just a one off event.
Any hints on what I should keep an eye out for?

This pdf file (attached) of LTB00487v3 may help. It is the 2013 instructions to change the turbo drain pipe to the new design. Perhaps you'll be able to recognise what version drain pipe is on your vehicle.

But the TB does not list a VIN range, perhaps suggesting it's not been fixed for later model years? I've got an MY14 too, so now I'm wondering what drain is actually fitted:confused:

Cheers,

Look for the blanking plate attached with 2 screws about 100 mm up from the bottom of the sump. The revised drain is attached to the side of the block higher up and uses only 1 screw in its clamp.

Inspection done and all good. No more leak.
I asked about the revised drain pipe and interestingly was told mine was fitted with the original and not the smaller revised pipe that is fitted to vehicles only if blowing smoke.

The later drain pipe is not smaller and the only reason for not fitting it would be to save on the kit and its fitting cost.

I think it's strange that the later design has not been fitted as factory to later model years, ie MY13 or 14 onwards. Leaving a known problem with a known design fix in place and only change it if the owner complains of smoke doesn't sound like best practice to me.

Have you checked to see if the revised drain is fitted? I thought that I read that it was fitted to MY14+.

No I haven't. But Mungus has an MY14 so I was assuming based on what he's been told. I will check mine out tomorrow.

V6 of the technical bulletin dated 9/6/15 has a D4 end VIN of DA676456. Engines fitted to later vehicles no longer have the aperture in the sump for the original drain pipe, effective from engine# 0753185.

Well that saved me some work Graeme. My VIN is EA72xxxx.

Well that's interesting, my VIN is EA71xxxx. Looks like it'd be better to physically check this myself.

I asked about the revised drain pipe and interestingly was told mine was fitted with the original and not the smaller revised pipe that is fitted to vehicles only if blowing smoke.Perhaps the factory-fitted revised drain has a larger diameter pipe than the retro-fitted kits. The retro-fitted kit for the 4.4 retains the original drain as well as the new direct drain.

Quite possible Graham. I'll see if I can take a good pic when it's up in the air.

I've fitted heaps of the mod oil drain pipe to the D4 3.0lt and had assumed at some point it would become a factory installed item.

I think its as Graeme has said "The later drain pipe is not smaller and the only reason for not fitting it would be to save on the kit and its fitting cost"

Hi all

I see the turbo drain pipe fix is for TDV6 vehicles. My SDV6 has a VIN within the range quoted in the PDF. Have had oil drained a few weeks ago from the the manifold before the intercooler. A quart in volume.

The Tech Bull says from VIN AA510178 onwards
My VIN is SALLAAAF 5DA652XXX

Reason: Am wondering whether to get the kit that is currently for sale.

Perhaps at the time of the original TSB the SDV6 badge was not in use and that subsequent updates to the TSB didn't add the SDV6.

The LR specialist mob I bought my 2010 3.0 "TDV6" D4 from did a bunch of major service items readying for market, and that included replacing the turbo drain with a larger one.

It’s not larger but shorter. It feeds into the engine block rather than the sump to reduce back pressure when draining.

Mine is puffing smoke 2010 HSE V6.. just to enquire who has been using this kit?

Genuine Turbo Drain Pipe Kit suitable for TDV6 Discovery 4 Range Rover LR078875 LR044555 (https://www.allfourx4.com.au/epages/shop.sf/en_AU/?ObjectPath=/Shops/allfourx4/Products/LR078875KIT)

No problems. Just do it but first check it hasn’t already been done if you haven’t already. You wouldn’t be the first to buy the kit to find the fix has already been applied.

my MY11 SDV6SE is not showing any signs of said smoke, I still have to check if the mod has been done, my VIN falls within the range as per the TSB. I’ll probably do the mod anyway as a precaution. Should not be too hard to do

Easy to check, see if blanking plate is fitted...turn to full left lock and view just above the sump plug. 146009

Cheers eddy,

just checked, still original set up, but not blowing any smoke.

had a closer look what’s involved, think I’ll defer this mod until I get the smoke issue....
