Rear Disc Brake Stone Guard Reinforcers - Stiffies for short!

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/05/557.jpg

Defender Rear Disc Brake Stone Guards are veryimportant, stopping stones hitting the discs. Unfortunately they arenotoriously prone to cracking and in many instances, coming completely looseand damaging the ABS line.

This is a real issue for anyone heading bush oncorrugated dirt roads. The problem first surfaced for me with the 110 in theform of a very very annoying squeak. Luckily I found the problem just before theycracked all the way through and did further damage.

The 130 has not fared any better after just onetrip?..

One fixing point cracked completely off and oneother badly cracked. Clearly these would not have survived another trip.

A genuine replacement set is around $145 per pairbut Nugget Stuff now have a solution for just $50.

Laser cut from 2mm steel and zinc plated to stoprusting, the Nugget Stuff Rear Disc Brake Stone Guard Reinforcers are easy tofit and stop the vibration which causes the originals to fail

Because they fit over, and use the originalfitting points, the Reinforcers work with already cracked guards and can be fitted by anyone with a10mm spanner, 5mm drill and a tube of silicon sealant.

Supplied are 2 zinc plated 2mm thick steelReinforcers and all nuts and bolts. All for just $50 per set from Nugget Stuff, Mulgo and British Car Components.

Will these also fit D2s or are the guards different?

According to Paddocks spares (used because they have pretty pictures) defender rear mudshields are the same as early D1s but D2s are a different part number and different looking beast so the stiffies won't work :(

Damn, I wanted stiffies for my D2 :D (partly for the job they do and partly because I'd enjoy asking other landy nuts "Would you like to see my stiffy!")

Can you do a stiffie for the Defender 90 rear mudflap to stop it melting in the exhaust area?

Can you send me a pic. I have heard of the problem but don't have a 90..good idea though and it would be great to have several stiffies :)

Hi nugge t, Here it is almost as new:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2015/11/364.jpg (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/jodel1050/media/Heritage%2090/P1030293_zpsj35xhgo3.jpg.html)

Here it is now 1000kms on:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2015/11/365.jpg (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/jodel1050/media/Heritage%2090/P1030334_zpssptyafep.jpg.html)

And a close up of the molten area:

Seems the problem is that the mudflap bends back into the exhaust gas stream at high speeds 100kph or so. In the UK it has been put down to towing or heavy loads, well I've not done any towing yet & other than a 13kg dog no excessive loads in the back!

LR will replace these under warranty.

I hope they do, but want one that does not flex back into the exhaust stream, so one of nudge t's stiffies may just do the job for the new one that will last longer than 1000kms. This new 90 has to last me at least the next 20 years or so, then I will probably not remember it, where am I?

Had three replaced under warranty, but warranties don't last forever. I haven't fronted LR for a replacement since warranty expired and there is an argument that the mudflap isn't fit for purpose and they should continue to replace them however what are the chance of that?

Watching to see if Nugget can come up with something.

I'm having trouble uploading the information and pictures but if you look for "melting mud flaps" in 90 110 130 Defender County section,Shatkins has a solution posted on the 23rd October 2015.

If you are thinking of making a steel guard/cover to go around the edge of the mudflap would be interested in a set. If you need a mudflap to work with i have one to lend out.

Have bought a set of these ........plan to fit them tomorrow ..........do I need to remove the wheels or do the guards come off with the wheels still on ......I think they are held on by 3 bolts ......

I've just re-found this... for some reason I thought you made these for the front (which is what I have broken, hence my searching and re-finding) I know now they are for the rear but am wondering if you have any plans to fix the same issue at the other end of the truck?
