Just arrived on Fraser island, long drive around road closures but we are here and all seemed well.
Went to move frankenrover after unloading the luggage and got a gearbox fault message , seems to be working alright but there is no display of the gear I'm in does this mean no low range , the indicator lights are not flashing , that was the big clue that the xyz switch had given up last time, been about 2 years since I changed it for a working used one
I am hoping the 4 hour drive left him tired and he will be fine in the morning
If not, any suggestions

First thing I would check is the battery connections are clean and tight.
I have had gearbox fault messages due to this before, as soon as I cleaned the connections the fault went away.
Hope that's all it is, good luck!

New battery earlier this year, for that reason, but cleaning the terminals is a good call, thanks

I'd be checking the battery too... Had the same issue with a previous P38 of mine.
Check the alternator too, if it's not charging that could be the cause of your troubles.
Cheers

I will give it a look
Alternator and battery are both less than 6 months old but still worth a check

So I started up this morning, and it seems to have healed up. The gear indicator is working as its supposed to and no error message .
I will have to find it of course, after alternator and battery I will be climbing underneath to check all the plugs are connected.

Could be an earthing issue! worth a look at least.
Hope you have fun at Fraser regardless:)

Did you come up the beach?
Could be a bit of water in the xyz switch/plug and this morning it's dried out.
You should still be able to get lowrange - though we only needed it once last trip.
We were there in April and didn't want to leave. .. have a great time.

Thanks for all the comments people, got back last night, wonderful place
The error message came up after the ferry crossing, diving across the island and down the beach and no repeat of the message, very strange.
Just for the record, even on mud tyres I didn't need low range once, just plowed through everything without a problem, brilliant thing.

I had same issue, if i used high beam i would get a fault and gearbox sat in one gear, turned car off, waited a few seconds, restarted and problem gone. I ran an extra earth from strut tower to engine and seamed to fix, was good for months. Then it started happening again and MR Automotive found a crack in my fuse box at the power connection , replaced fusebox and problem solved. P38s seam to be very sensitive to voltage drops. Good luck.
