Won a military Landy - will it get me home?

Morning fellas,

I'm pretty new to the forum but have already learned a lot from reading the threads, thanks for that.

I pick up my military Landy tomorrow from Minto, NSW. I've sorted the CTP and I can't wait to go round in circles with RTA / services NSW for the rego.

I know the vehicle has a blue slip (NSW) but will it get me the 50km home or do I need to drive to the closest servo and check fluids etc? If I do aside from oil I will struggle with what I need to do so any advice is appreciated including what is the right type of oil / coolant etc for a 1988 perentie?

One more question- great thread abut looking up military vehicle history using the ARN- where do I find the ARN on the vehicle?

Plenty of info on this site or remlr.com - preferred oil for engine & gearbox seems to be Castrol RX Super - cheap in 20l drums when on special at supercheap

The only spot on the car will be a sales sticker on the windscreen. If you are getting a logbook with it it will have it on - otherwise it was listed on the sales catalogue you bought it from

Hi there.

Assuming you are mechanically minded... When you collect, go armed with a 1/2" knuckle/breaker bar, a shifter and a grease gun. The breaker bar will let you check the Transfercase, front and rear axles. The shifter will let you check the gearbox and swivel housings, and grease the props (three nipples on each) while you are under there. As long as the engine oil and water are ok, find a servo, fuel up and drive! An adventure starts.
I bought a 12 tonne truck the other day.. Flew over to Tamworth from Adelaide. Took it for a run. Seemed ok, decided to buy it, so grabbed the apprentice at the place where I bought it, and we went thru everything in about 40min. He learned a lot that day! A few days later and I was home with no probs. How far do you have to drive it?

Minto to Dural. I don't think I would evan get dirty getting under it. Check the oil check the water. If it sounds ok drive it home :)

Take 20 litres of diesel with you, as I have been told they just have enough in them, you do not want to have to learn how to bleed it on your first drive, especially in sydney traffic, cheers n have fun Dennis

If the fuel guage is registering you should be okay.

There is a service station within 1km Of grays.

It is well known amongst owners of multiple Land Rovers that it is better to ask for forgiveness then ask for permission.

I cannot see how anybody would be anything but very pleased .

if you turn right out of AFM and left at the roundabout there is a servo on Ben Lomond Rd on other side of the road at the next roundabout.

Ok so the RMS (RTA) consider a Perentie a commercial vehicle so rego was like $880?! I knew it was all going too well!

Anyway, I drove it home, all of the fluids were full and it half a tank and ran well, the log book said that the last thing to be replaced was the clutch so I was felling pretty lucky! Now for some stupid questions:

1. Where are the fuses located? At the moment my brake lights don't work. I thought the fuses might be in the compartment above the rear wheels but I don't have 'the key' yet so I haven't got in to either compartment

2. The thing revs endlessly but if you are in the wrong gear it laughs at you (but will still rev higher), hills make for some work- I had a few cars behind me when I was going up hill because the speed starts dropping despite high revs, is that typical?

So I now have a 87 county and an 88 perentie, I'll post a pic in the daylight, which LR should I put a winch on?

The perentie of course!!! The genuine Powauto winches were pretty cheap at the last auction, but you then have to find the pto and the driveshafts.

Ha haa! You have just found out you need a turbo. It only took your first drive as well haha.

Also, the fuse panel is in the same place as in the County.

Ok - a new day, a new question. I'm just assuming that the RTA / RMS in NSW would require me to have seat belts in the back on my Perentie to carry passengers (2 bench seats). Any suggestions on who can do that work or recommendations in the Sydney area? Any thoughts on price? Seems like just putting in some bolts but I'm sure it won't be that simple?

Nup. Not that simple.
You are altering the seating capacity of the vehicle. That will require engineering.
