My Dad in the UK is having a triple bypass tonight, I know it is done all the time but I am rather worried especially as he is 69.
Part of me is thinking I should have tried harder to get home, but it is not so easy this time of the year to leave the farm with fire risks etc.
Anyone here had a bypass?
So worried
Chris

Hope it all goes OK. These days that sort of procedure is common so I am sure it will be OK

Best of luck with it Chris.
Mum had a new valve implanted many years ago, that's even more common, and we stressed out to the max. As said, they know what their doing, should be a walk in the park.
I understand your concerns for the farm, we were in the same boat, but easier as we were only a few hours away. We took turns at her side, so hopefully your dad has some other family that can be with him and keep you updated at the same time.
I'm sure he understands why you can't be there.

All the best.

HI my brother had a five bypasses about 5 months ago. They did not pick it up until he was unwell at home and taken to the hospital.
He is fit never drinks or smoked in is life. It was really touch and go for awhile there. He did have one of them fail but when you have that many they expect that one will fail and they can not do the one that failed. He has to take a few tablet for the rest of his life. It did take my brother a while to get back to is old self, but rang him the other day and he was on the roof cleaning, because they are in the Dandenong Ranges and they do get fires up there. Yesterday rang him and he was away at a clearance sale, as he buys farming stuff and resell it. My brother is 71 and it seems nothing will stop him. There is a little lady next to us that had had 3 bypass and the same thing doesn't drink or smoke and she is 87 and hers when well. She still goes and plays tennis.
So all the best for your dad, they have great hospitals over there as well as us.
Heather:)

Hope all goes well for your father Chris. It's amazing what they can do these days with heart operations etc and I'm sure he will be the better for it.

All the best Chris, it's pretty standard procedure these days, but I understand your concerns.

Thanks guys,
He went in about half an hour ago, I hate being half a world away!
My sister is there and will be there for mum and dad, but I want to be there too. The Op was supposed to be after Christmas but they found a slot earlier and he took it so being there would have been hard anyway, but it still feels wrong not being there.
I love Aus, this sort of thing is the only downside when family are ill as it is sooo far away.
Oh hum so worried I know it is a common op these days and I know he needs it but it is my Dad..
Anyway I should know if it has all gone well my maybe 10.30pm.

Thinking of you all! ☺ it is a lot more common procedure nowadays so all should go well. Have relie over in west aust going in for a big op on Wednesday and it is hard being a long way away. (Not as far as the uk though but still any distance is hard)

All the best wishes.

Harry's mum had a quadruple when she was in her 80's, She just had her 97th birthday last month. Your dad will be fine, though we do understand you anguish. Hope for a speedy recovery:)

As others have said, it should be almost a routine op these days and hopefully all will go to plan but there is always the chance something could go wrong like a reaction to anaesthetic etc and my thoughts are with you and your Dad. Not quite the same but I had to have a couple of stents inserted into a coronary artery almost 2 years ago now for narrowing caused by plaque buildup and I am fine now. Coronary care is pretty good these days if caught early enough. Hopefully all will be well and you will get to see him shortly.

The bloke next door is 80 something. He had multi by-pass surgery done recently. It knocked him around a bit for about 4 weeks then came good. He's in pretty good health, had a low stress life as never married. 😄

Best wishes from here mate. First world facilities give him the best chance. Distance is hard, I'm sure he understands.

I hope all went well.
The distance thing is hard.
My Mum died in the UK some time back after I had moved here. She had had Dementia for 6 years +. During those last 6 years when I was living there I used to go see her every Saturday without fail. When she died I was here and had to decide whether to go back for the funeral and I decided against. I went out for a walk in the bush with a picture of her at the time of her funeral. My Sister gave me a very hard time about it. She used to see her once a year.
cheers,
D

Thanks again everyone,
He is fine it seems. He has a lot of healing to do but he is already driving everyone nuts. I went to bed at 1.30am when he came out of his op and my sister rang me at 6am to tell me I could call him. I had a good chat with him he seems in great spirits. Mum had been so worried she had only eaten a piece of toast she could not even finish and she found out dad had eaten a large meal and a sweet mum felt much better and she said typical he had the sweet too :D
Dad was already asking when he could go home and complaining about everything so he is back to his normal self :D
Mum had a giggle when she read the leaflet they give you to tell you what the person is not allowed to do when they arrive home for 4 weeks. It said he could not wash the dishes, clean windows or vac the house, she said he has never done any of those things in his entire life anyway :D
It is amazing home routine they have made such a major op in the last years!
Thanks again everyone,
Chris

Look out for signs of depression in the coming months.
Pretty common side effect of the heart lung machine.
