Hi I really want to buy a Defender 90 but I am not sure if now is the right time because of the end of production appears to be making prices go up. Do you think it might be better to wait or are prices likely to keep going up?
I have seen second hand 2012 models advertised for around $40000. Is this reasonable?
Cheers

"Reasonable" is an interesting word. You'd be hard pressed to take my D90 off me for $40k. Does that make it unreasonable to offer that or to ask that? I think well looked after ones will hold their values exceptionally well so probably little point in waiting in hope for the prices to come down. Might be a biased opinion though, seeing as I have one:cool:.

Ha ha ha, not really the right predicament to be waiting for price drop. You will have some leverage though if you are buying new as there seems to be plenty of 90's floating around.

Agreed, I bought a 90 thinking i'd be the exception to the rule... but even in Mackay where you hardly see defenders there are a few around.
You can't offer me enough money to sell my 90. You'll have to pry it from my cold dead hands! :p but in saying that, it's a stupid small car! and there is bound to be plenty of guys who bought it single and then a Mrs came along and is making/going to make him sell it so they can fit all the midgets in the car.

Last time I was in Townsville the dealer there had a new one or 2 sitting in the yard... if you have the extra cash you'd get a nice new smelling car with warranty etc

Now is as good a time as any.
Considering the end of production is near, I haven't noticed any dramatic change in pricing, except on new, where ya'd now be battling to find one at a discounted price. I haven't noticed much change in used pricing either.
My advice to you would be to take your time, work out the spec, colours & options that you would like, and then start looking for the latest & best that you can afford.

Irony in this is when the MY12 D90 2.2 ltr was released the dealers were selling them for $40k new on road just to entice buyers (so long as you bought white). The seller of your target D90 is getting 100% return on his money for a 3 year old car. That's a gold investment standard in the automotive asset class.

I think there is a new one in Wollongong as I drove past yesterday. That might be a good option? I'm not sure if it's a normal or one of the limited editions. It's not green or orange though:D

Yes, the Gong one is White with the Premium Leather ebony seat upgrade. Seems nice for $51k.
Used for $40k... sounds ok to me. 2 years ago however, 90's MY12 with 30k km's were selling for mid late $30's... so there is no doubt prices have firmed up.
If you want a new one, get in quick... because they WILL all be sold out soon, no doubt at all!
