Im a Windows 8 user and have "upgrade to Windows 10" spam pop up regularly enough. Is there a way that I can stop this or is Microsoft going to bully users with spam until they relent and upgrade to Windows 10 to stop the popups.

Do yourself a favour and upgrade it - everyone that bought a computer with Windows 8 gets a free upgrade to 10 because 8 is a dog and they know it and the upgrade is well worth it. Much more stable and user friendly. SWMBO used to drive me crazy with her temper when she was running 8, now her tantrums at the computer are much less... :D

Go into the Task Manager and end the process called "GWX.exe", will remove the taskbar icon and stop popups.

Then go get a copy of Windows 7 and enjoy a logical user interface for a change ;) my next computer will have to be a Mac if they keep carrying on with this nonsense...

which is all derived from OSX :D except some of the bugs...

personally i find 10 far superior to anything previous...

but prefer OSX to anything mickeysoft...

That's nice to know as I had hardly any problems with Win7Pro and accidentally updated to Win10 on Thursday.

Pressed the wrong button.....

Precious wireless data used up, and it'd only just rolled over three days prior. Sigh.

As mentioned in another post - why I won't be updating to Windoze 10 anytime soon...

Sneaky Microsoft renamed its data slurper before sticking it back in Windows 10 (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/11/26/microsoft_renamed_data_slurper_reinserted_windows_ 10/)

I recall reading the telemetry in W10 is not present in the enterprise version.

Thanks all.

So is the feeling that now Win10 is better than Win8 and the upgrade is worthwhile? I ask because everything I had read previously suggested that there were probs going on with Win10. Admittedly, Win8 has given me no problems at all so far.

Do you know---
the Win 10 upgrade will download from surrounding win 10 machines?

though 15 hours is a stretch:o

Slunnie, If you like 8 you'll like 10 ;)

I had three machines to update and, conscious of bandwidth, I downloaded the win 10 disk image from Microsoft and used that for the install. Much quicker (about 45 mins for the download and much the same for each machine).

If you can download the iso from work, so much the better.

I got that first time. I let it sleep for a day with a hammer poised above and it worked the 3rd time.

Just updated mine, took one and half hrs.
I think I missed something in the Telemetry conversation though.
Where do I find this setting? I can't find anything relating to it so far in the settings options. Though IT this isn't my forte.

Hold down the Windows key and tap the R key
In the box that opens type 'services.msc? and press the Enter key
In the ?Services (Local)? section locate ?Connected User Experiences and Telemetry? and double-click it
In the ?Service status? section click ?Stop?
Under the ?Startup type? drop down menu select ?Disabled? and then confirm this and close the window by clicking ?OK?

So the fix suggested by microsoft facebook page did not work... not impressed.

The person that decided auto update was a good idea should reevaluate their life's choices. (How strangely PC of me...)
