I will never live this down!!! I was fighting fires in difficult country and we were winning (actually we beat the fire :D). Down point I was rescued by a Toyota  and they wont let me forget it either. I found the brigades new to us TD5 which is amazing it romps up hills in low second so well I cant imagine what low first is for??
THEN it had a fit and stopped?? The battery was flat I radioed in and got the rest of my guys out and the brought a camera and a Toyota :censored: I think it is the alternator we will know next week, but they had a good laugh (TOYOTA DRIVERS). What I will say though is it took them an extra 20 minutes to get out of the rough track as they went so slow. IMO the Defender was just happier than the Tojo :D
So annoying though it let me down.

Hmm, can you trust a Land Rover when your life depends on it? or go the Toyota?

My excuse :D is the landy has some unoriginal wiring all the way back to the battery due to been modded for a fire truck, my excuse and I am sticking to it :D
What was rather annoying and most embarrassing is it stopped five times!! Each time it stopped they chanted its three times now, then it now four and five!! :censored: Even though the engine was running when the battery voltage dropped below a certain level the dash lit up like a Christmas tree and the darn thing stopped. This is the annoying thing with computer engines.
Anyway apart this it over this fire season it has been amazing going places non of the other even small trucks can go and it is also able to travel quickly off road too which is a huge advantage for a fire truck as you can imagine.
It it does turn out to be the alternator what is a correct price for one as I am taking it in early next week to be fixed?
Cheers

What would happen if a Toyota alternator died? Same thing I bet.
My alternator bearing seized on me one day in my 300tdi. I was going nowhere and nothing to do with computers.
ps the only reason Toyota devotees rib you is because clearly the Defender is better 😊 Wait til you give them a tow out! I've had Toyota mates try and tell me to keep it quiet that I rescued them 🙃

Many do,this is one of the issues with the LC200.
Might also be something simple,loose battery terminals,chafed wiring,loose earth,etc,etc.
The vehicle isn't new,it has been modded and used extensively off road,it seems.

Alternators fail! **** happens.Should've given it a gentle tap with a persuader. Bet it would've come good.:D

Yes I should have tried that. Around the battery there has been a lot of wires added for fire truck use and the clamp came loose possible the reason the alternator failed (if that is what is the problem). The clam has a plastic nob on it so not surprising it came loose.

Check out the earth connections as well, including the one on the transfer case. Deefers are well known for having the odd issue in this area. I had a crimp on an earth cable loosen just slightly and it was enough to kill all power, although didn't stop the TDI running.

A TD5 fuel pump draws LOTS of amps,if its not charging at full strength you will run into these issues.
Remember when you first got it you asked about an electrical plug,Graz said it was to depot charge it.
You may need to implement a depot charge system for its down time.Fire units do lots of time at fires with all the lights running plus other electrical loads(aircon fan on warp factor 4:p:p:p) and sitting idling. The alternator will not keep up depite being 120amp.Arriving at a fire fully charged will help.
GOODLUCK

You can always tell the Toyota blokes that the alternator on a Land Rover is the exact same alternator as on a Land Cruiser.
You can use Land Cruiser kits to fix Land Rover TD5 alternators.
Maybe you should do a sneaky swap with one of them.

I was thinking to add a battery isolator switch like on our other truck. I am taking her in to the auto electrician in town who is a brigade supporter. I will also get him to look at the aircon which is pants. it works a bit if you happen to be going round a corner which is really weird.

The quirkiness never ceases to amaze me. One minute Landy is grumbling about something, there's a strange vibration or sound, 30 mins later it's gone. The indicator will stay on for no apparent reason. There's a clunk underneath and he feels rough on the road, but then you pull over, switch off, have a cuppa, then get going again and he's riding as smooth as silk! He definitely hates cold mornings, but warm mornings are great. Even though Landy Puma has a generic Ford originated engine, transplanted into the Landy driveline it's no longer a ford, it takes on the character of the vehicle, the tenor of the transfer case and the resonance of the form. With Tdi Landy any breakdown is part of a life cycle but he'd always let me know before hand if I wanted to listen to the signs. Puma is yet too young but I'm getting to know his quirks, so when the time comes I'll know what's up.

The aircon was 2/3 full, but no signs of any leaks so it has been topped up and leak tested and it seems fine. No leaks, but not full (only a Landy :D) The fault was the alternator fuse had blown, possibly caused by the battery connection coming loose. The rev counter comes off the alternator so that is the reason that did not work and the reversing alarm was getting its power off the same circuit so that is also the reason it did not work either. Basically all the issues were caused by an aftermarket battery clamp that had been fitted to allow other wires to be connected for use as a fire truck. Not the poor landies fault at all!!
The viscous coupling on the fan is dodgy though apparently so I will order one unless anyone knows a better alternative? How about an electric fan?

Thanks Andy,
I will be checking the viscous fan myself in the next days, if I confirm it is an issue I will contact Roverlord.

No to the electric fan on a turbo diesel. They rely too much on air flow for intercooler, radiator etc. Ok as a supplementary fan, not as primary.

Get a thick towel or folded newspaper.
Gently offer it to the fan whilst idling cold, even cold it should try and grab somewhat. If it has no resistance at all its stuffed.
Try it hot,it should try really hard to grab the towel or paper,if it offers poor resistance its stuffed.
They come complete with fan, cant seperate.
It takes some courage to test them like this, once you have done it you will be confident in the method.
At one stage my D2 was getting warm on hills, turned out the viscous was shot, after the test I could grab it with my fingers as it had no resistance. At the time we also had a TD5 Defender,I tested its viscous with the towel,it wanted to eat it.No way was I going to try and stop that with my fingers;);););)
Im sure others use this method, and others may have different ways of testing.
ENJOY
