Japan nearly did it again. Fiji flogged Canada, then in the first half, looked like doing the same to Japan.Japan came back, led 17-14 with 20 seconds to go, Fiji scored on the bell, 21-17 to Fiji. Australian women defeated NZ to go to the 1/4 finals, Aus. men defeated Kenya in their first game. Speight was in the run on side, sent to the sin bin for throwing the ball away. Scrappy game. The NZ mens side look the goods, again.

USA defeated NZ. The Olympics has has given new life to 7 a side rugby. NZ are being forced to work for a win, they have also made 5 changes to their squad. Two of the fastest players I've ever seen, play for the USA, Isles and Baker.

I believe the ARU has sat on its hands for too long, regarding the 7's team. They took far too long to select a coach, decided to develop size, over speed, in their players, and now have a team of lumbering giants, as opposed to the Kiwis & Blitzbokkies. Cooper will not make much of a difference, IMO. Once again, the ARU just don't seem to get it.

Jarrod Haynes has joined the Fijian side, and will play in London this weekend. This has been planned since the 7 a side comp. games played in Sydney last. Haynes has represented Fiji in the Rugby League World cup. Will he have the Aerobic fitness? Do they even care? I guess he has had the opportunity to get the required fitness level since the talks in Sydney.

Every now & again you read a feel good story, like one in today's Courier Mail about Sean McMahon, Australian 7's and Wallaby player. He was a skinny 17 year old kid from Nudgee College, Brisbane, unable to break into the big time in rugby, he had the papers to join the Army, all filled out. That was until Anthony and Brett Picone put together a no-name team of kids from Qld, called them the Newstars, and entered them in the Noosa 7's comp. in 2011. The comp had the fijian team, and the Australian 7's side , plus other top class sides, all playing to win. The Newstars beat the Australian side in the final, 25-24. In the newstars were McMahon, Samu Kerevi, Junior Rasolea, Pama Fou, Stephan Van De Walt, all raw talent.

More good news on the Rugby front, is the Ella 7's competition held at Nambucca Heads. The Ella's took a team of indigenous players to New Guinea, for the Pacific Islands comp. Outclassed by players from Tonga and Fiji, they decided something had to be done. I just finished watching NITV coverage of the first Ella 7's comp. held this year. This is going to be a permanent fixture , with indigenous teams from all over Australia coming together to promote rugby, and find new talent. It can only be a positive move, both for rugby, and the young indigenous people involved.

I can't help feeling something of this nature might be beneficial for the kids of Aurukun.

Finally, an Aussie team with the " M " word, hope the Wallabies take note.

Melodie Robinson, a former New Zealand women's rugby great herself and now an expert commentator on the game, made this point about the Aussies before the final: ?Even though they wear ribbons in their hair and look like butter wouldn't melt in their mouths, they are also controlled mongrels on the field with an incredible self-belief.?
