Well i`ve had a busy year at work this year starting with a top companion work mate passing away in April :(.
It has been a hell of work load upon my self since that day  Any way they managed to hire this new guy 3 months ago with no experience :censored:
The busy season is well and truly upon us and believe me i have done some serious hours with this.
Now this new bloke 33 years old i was told was the best of a bad bunch:twisted: .
Now never having experience in Heavy vehicle`s i had him in my truck for 2 days with some friendly tuition so after 2 days i give him the wheel Wow im thinking this guy is over cautious and i mean to the point it was extremly frustrating sitting next to him  but i got it he had only ever drove one too got his licence.
This guy drives a Commy ute with the 5 poster bar aerials lights  Are you getting the picture oh and the blue singet:angel:Not that im putting a label on the young bloke:cool:
Any way i cut him loose on his own after 2 weeks of baby sitting what was i thinking but i only acted apon the owner of the company saying he is a grown man (not)
Well ive had nothing but bull**** excuses from this guy for delays and holdups ect, I had previously warned him not to bull****
Anyway after numerous soft love talks from myself i had no choice but to involve the mrs office mannager only to be told after said meeting i was abit harsh  So i wiped my hands of said person and handed all communication to the yard manager for some micro managing ;) Mmmm guess what same old BS , My work load is just so hectic and im not feeling like this person is helping a great deal .
Im getting so many complaints from our customers re this guy no hi vis driving their f/lifts like a idiot and all i can do is pass it on to the yard manager.
Well last week said guy comes in on tuesday after having monday off saying he almost died over the weekend due to a allergic reaction to peanuts in food he mil gave him and is having back spasims and pulls this jar of pills out and shows me which states can not operate machinery.
So i say well your not driving this week  The work load was crazy last week even with me doing a trip over night i still managed to complete all work required for the week on my own.
This over night trip when i returned to work i notice 2 others cleaning the toilets  i jokingly say you the new cleaners oh no comes the comment we all are taking turns i dont think so i say well take it up with the owner they say cool off i go . In to the office i go and say whats this about cleaning toilets i say oh we are all doing it now i say not me if you told me that in the job discription i would not be here so there and then i give a weeks notice they refuse to except it, Out to my truck i go and call the owner only to get his PA ok so i send him a txt informing him i had given a weeks notice , I did get several missed call`s from the owner:angel:
So today both managers at work are saying we dont want you to leave mmm as tomorrow should be my last day there . I had a bit of a drive today which gave me some time to call the owner in Sydney who promptly informed me he would not except my resignation so i dumped on him about the pay rise i got in june which was half of the cpi and all the work i have taken on since the passing of our work mate also the mr 5 poster singlet wearing truck driver is not the right one for the job.
Too my suprise with plenty of praise to my efforts a resolution came forth and im staying ;)and a certain other person will have work for someone else
The owner was aware of some things this guy had done but not all.
Now this toilet cleaning thing im not being sexist nor am i saying its a lower form of employment it is simply somerthing that i refuse to do and that is clean a public toilet i have cleaned my own toilet and will do if needed i will not clean a public toilet and put my job on the line for my beliefs.
Do you think i was silly for doing so or what

We just got addressed by the Shire President. No more drinking at the depot after work.We just lost our CEO who was a great bloke,he purchased a tourist bussiness in town, new CEO starts next week. The council brought this in between CEOs,the outgoing CEO refused to ban drinking after work all the time he was here.
The boys are not happy. The ban only involves depot staff, they say the offices are a different story:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

If they want to pay me to clean the toilet, I'll clean the toilet, as long as I have the necessary qualifications and correct PPE.

What does a trainee truck driver pay? Will it keep me in a manner I wish to be accustomed.

I`ll let it beknown at the end of the day im staying and i wont be cleaning and im being rewarded ;)
I think if you believe in something and have due cause + some and stand up for your self there is nothing to worry about .
You also have to understand i have gone beyond my driving dutys ;) i just had to make it known as the owner has several companys and we only see him 2 days a fortnight , So he would not be aware of some things

I don't think the big issue is the toilet cleaning.
Chris has put up with extra work load which he is not rewarded for.
If you are employed to do a job, then end up having to carry a bludger and do the work of 2 then you should be renumerated for that. You can't expect to get 2 for the price of one, if doing more than orginaly in job description.
As for toilets, Yes I've cleaned up after pigs that I worked with used them , and some peoples toilet habits have a lot to desire. I've seen cattle trailers, that after the cattle arrive at the abbatoir were cleaner than some peoples toilet habits. One place I bought and fitted a gate bolt and lock and locked the toilets, and told the culprits to go and use the bushes as their toilet. They got the message quick smart.

Wouldnt get me cleaning public dunnies either.
We have a dirty animal at work who has a gerbil fetish. At least once a month he drops a rat in the dunny.Last one was still alive,it was in there for days before drowning,it was big enough just to keep its nose out of the water.
We have our suspicions but nobody will put their hand up:wasntme::wasntme::wasntme::wasntme:

Have you tried taking your friday drinkies to the local pub instead, wearing work insignias, with the work trucks parked outside, getting ****ed and offloading all the dirty laundry from work in public?

I've seen one boss change their mind about banning work drinkies after the employees took it public instead :)

NO WAY.
We have a couple of resident gays who frequent the pub, they are very forward in approaching anybody who is up for it.Funnily enough they seem to be accepted by the mob,not what one would expect in a small cliky town.
Each to their own.

Ahh dear Andy welcome to the modern OH&S world :(:(:(. The Australian mining industry has been no drinks on site for a long time now, plus on many sites they have a daily blow in the bag just to make sure you're sober for work.

It was soooo refreshing in the Congo, to roll back into the office from the field and the exploration manager have a fridge of of cold Heineken in his office ready to dispense.

And on another note there was a good selection of slingshots at all the camping stores in Cape Town last week. Again a different world...

Cheers

Steve

Same in the bus industry here, Andy. No alcohol on the premises at all, has been that way for a number of years. Drug testing is done every now and then though, not daily as in other industries. By every now and then I mean about six monthly, you'll rock up at work and be asked to pick a colour marble out of a bag, red you are tested and blue you are not.

ps. I seem to get the red ones all the time though. Nothing to hide 'cause I have never taken drugs and no longer drink.

I've worked at office sites that have the same rules as in the field. Random drug and alcohol tests. If found positive, you are escorted off site and contract terminated. Jay walking, crossing on a red light - all reportable OH&S incidents.

Funny how the "standards" seem to be applied only to the work sites, but often not in head office. ;)

The company I was working for until recently strictly enforces the "no alcohol on site" rule on all of its mining and civil sites. Yet there is always a ready supply in a fridge that is not used for any other purpose in head office, and "a couple of beers on a Friday afternoon" is standard practice there.

As I now only work on an occasional basis as a "consultant" to the company - the rules don't apply to me. I have a beer fridge in my office. :p:p:p

The OP is exactly why I decided, after getting out of my last business, I would never have a business where I employ anyone.

In my last business I had an employee, who had keys, come in after hours and break into our safe and clean out about two and a half K.

There was overwhelming evidence that it was him, but as it could not be categorically proved, he was not charged.
After sacking him, he threatened me with unfair dismissal. I was advised to reinstate him.

Chris. It is a shame that the bloke did not eat a bit more peanut butter.

What I don't understand is this. How can a resignation be refused.
If you give notice and they refuse to accept it and at the expiry of the notice you don't front up for work, what happens?
Do the police come and collect you and take you to work?:)

The mind is getting fuzzy after a few years retirement, but unlike normal contract law where there must be an offer and acceptance (and all in good faith etc - see 6 elements of contract law), once you provide proof of resignation (eg in writing, but can be verbal preferably with witnesses, unless contract specifies otherwise, and even then there is usually wriggle room), then once you work out the terms of your particular contract = you are free to go, plus must be given any due entitlements.

Rangieman is obviously an exemplary employee, who the organisation quite rightly did not want to lose. By continuing to turn up for work after the expiry period (and by this time with some sweetener undertakings provided), arguably he had accepted the employer's "declining to accept" his resignation and all was back to square 1.

The employer's "declining" is not valid/enforceable at law - again providing the employee has met his contractual requirements re resignation etc.

Dave my resignation was verbal and if needed i was more than willing to put it in writing .
But after basicly being begged not to leave and to wait till the owner came down to have a meeting with me .
The owner is the best boss i have ever had and is more than willing to come to the party . I did not ask for a pay rise or a bonus all i did befor the meeting was put my concerns out there i also stressed im not asking for anything and left it up to his discretion . There were a couple of other sweetners he put to me which i dont want to discuss;)
My intention was not deliberate blackmail nor holding them over a barrel .
I honestly was prepared to leave and i was serious about it in no words but i gave the owner the benifit of doubt:cool:
