Hi all
For a while now (many years) I have had a problem with the right side brake/tail light either not working or working very faintly (1999 TD5 Ute, owned from new). Some years ago I had the local garage 'repair? it and they replaced the original lamp holder with an aftermarket one which seem to work fine for a while but recently the same old problem has come back.
On the weekend I replaced all the indicators and the front side lights with Wipac (coloured) LED's which also required swapping the relay. These all work fine and are a massive improvement over the original fitted equipment. You can actually see them clearly from more than 10 feet away!
I didn't replace/upgrade the tail/brake lights as I was waiting for an original three pin plug and lead to swap out with the one the local garage guy had 'repaired? so everything would be back to standard. This arrived in the mail yesterday but I haven't installed it yet? Anyway I didn't see how not replacing these at this time could cause a problem.
However I have a bigger problem now. The right side tail/brake light does not work at all now, and the left side tail/brake is fully illuminated when I have the side/head lights on. IE both filaments are working all the time. With the light switch in the off position and my foot on the brake pedal (ignition on) I get the left tail/brake light of FULL and the dash lights come on as do the front side lights! When I have the headlights switch on (I always drive with the headlights on) the left tail light is on FULL as above (nothing on the right) and there is no difference when I put my foot on the brake pedal (as this is already on).
I suspect a short somewhere in the loom around the right side tail/brake lamp but really don't have the prerequisite knowledge to trouble shoot effectively. The problem I think may have been triggered when I drowned all the fittings and connections in WD40 to assist in removing parts for my upgrade project. There is also a trailer electrical connection which hasn't been used in many years but seems to be very clean and ok. There are no obvious problems with the loom that I can see, though moving it around used to assist in the right side lights working.. so something dodgy inside it ;-)
Anyone had a similar issue and know what the problem maybe? Or more importantly what the fix maybe?
Appreciate your guidance :p
