Hi Guys,
can anyone tell me what sized spline socket I need to remove the borg warner transfer case. How does everyone else unscrew them? I guess you could just use vicegrips if it wasn't still installed in the car :)
To be clear, I'm talking about the bolts that hold the transfer case to the gearbox. They have a male spline head on them!
I just don't want to buy a whole spline socket set and find the socket I need isn't there...............

I'm pretty sure I just used a regular socket, selected for best fit. Don't remember that being any trouble on my mate's RRC, I used 17mm hex head bolts for the LT230 that went back in.

I'll give that a go. If there anything like the prop shaft bolts, I'll trash the spline heads without the correct tool though :( Gee's those prop shaft bolts were massively tight!

They are not a standard double hex (12 point) are they?

I'll take a piccie later. They sure do look to be a spline. Far more "teeth" than the Etorx sockets I have :)

I dont remember ever touching proper spline drive nuts or bolts on a landy.
its all stock single hex, double hex, square drive, torqz or allen, phillips pozi and flat head.

Yep, you were right .... double hex, a standard socket fits nice and tightly. I'll be damned ... I've been working on cars since I was 12years old and never come across these bolts before. I would have sworn that was spline drive to look at :)

Shane , yes its funny as you say never come across these bolts before, yet nearly every damn socket set comes standard with double hex. I had to hunt around to buy a single hex socket set to fit THE MAJORITY of nuts and bolts.
Double hex can mess up standard bolts that are tight as they only have those small areas of contact to the corners of heads.

I have a good double hex set but when working on my tdi i really need a single hex set, rounded a couple of bolts when i did the head replacement but luckily i have a full set of spares from the tdi i stripped.

Bahco is worth a look, they do some really nice single hex socket sets, the one gripe I have is the breaker bars are too short.
I have a 3/8" and 1/2" set at work. My mechanics tools are all Sidchrome though.
