Just been reading about a new everest going up in smoke .
Bloke was test driving in it for the Tele and he said that multiple warnings flashed on instrument panel before it went blank and engine cut out.
Ford is working hard to get to bottom of it.

It did happen.
New Ford SUV bursts into flames (http://www.news.com.au/finance/business/manufacturing/new-ford-everest-suv-catches-fire-during-a-test-drive-destroyed-by-the-blaze/news-story/86b4c77b9a90026c85be3b7b875a04cd)

Many years ago (about 1990) I was driving to work in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, in my almost new company car (Ford Laser). I spopped at lights on the Burwood Highway, and became aware of smoke rising from under the bonnet.

I hastily exited and lifted the bonnet and found the under bonnet insulation was on fire. Grabbing the unburnt bits I was able to pull it out and chuck it on the road. There was nothing else burning or even singed or hot except the bonnet. We were never able to come up with any explanation, but the only thing I could think of is that a driver in front of me threw a cigarette but out and it bounced up and was sucked in up the front of the engine and held against the insulation by the airflow. I didn't think that stuff would burn, but it did. I don't know what would have happened if I had not stopped then.

Maybe the Everest has some common components with Jeep, didn't Jeeps catch fire a while ago.

A mate of mine works down the road from a large LR Indee workshop.

He recons he has seen at least five go up in smoke in the last five years, not all Discos, but all LR products:(:D

I saw an XJS jag on fire a month or so ago.

They get old i suppose. Td's would be more prone? No inherent fault though....google up Jeep electrical issues...
