Hi all
I am going to fit an oil cooler to my R380 gearbox. I have sourced an oil thermostat from a later model TD5 and also picked up an oil cooler off ebay.
I plan to mount the cooler on the bullbar. I didn't want to mount it under the bullbar (ie on the radiator cross member) as this will expose the oil cooler to potential damage.
Does anyone see any issues with the location in the picture?
ps, the black rectangular box above the number plate is an old shuroo.
Thanks

Should be OK there.
Mark, I was going to mount mine in that gap between the crossmember and radiator support, do you think there's more potential for damage there ?
Having said that it isn't going to happen for a while yet seeing as the bits are in storage 6.5 hours away from where I'm living ATM. :D

My '97 build 130 with extended truck cab and tray does not have gearbox oil cooler as standard. Recently acquired one off D1. When I get around to installing it, have in mind to go in the opposite direction instead of to radiator area. ie Under the tray. So will not be contributing more heat to engine compartment and probably a bit extra to cab. However, this option is unlikely to be suitable for Defenders with tub or station wagon rear bodies.

I like your thinking Mox. I'll stick my head under my truck and have a look at alternatives somewhere under the tray, but tucked up where is can not get damaged.

Serg/uninformed was doing the same with his truck cab 110.

Mines in the same place on the front but underneath the radiator, mines fitted with a rididij front bar so gets plenty o airflow from the front.
I also fitted a t-box extended sump and wrapped the centre exhaust pipe (no box, straight through) I've noticed a considerable drop in heat and temps towing the camper trailer for the gearbox have dropped from 90deg to roughly 72deg (thats surface temp of the gearbox) handbrake lever temperature has also dropped considerably.
