G'day folks, firstly, I'd like to thank the owners, mods and members of this great site:).
I recently joined this fantastic site after purchasing a '95 P38a HSE 4.6.
This forum is brilliant and the wealth of info is astounding as well as super helpful!
I'm an old Landy enthusiast, previous beasts are:
'78 Ser III 109 2.25 petty (I owned this old girl when I lived in Broome [99-06] and she showed up plenty of $80k plus fourbies...tho half the time it's the wood duck owners:wasntme:
'93 Disco, 3.5, 5sp, 3 door.
'96 Disco, 3.9, auto, 5 door.
'98 Disco, 3.9, auto, 5 door...she was my pride and joy..LPG, RPI Dual timing amp, Magnecor HT leads, 2" Dobinsons coils, 265/75/16 Kelly Safari tyres, front comp bar with 12000lb winch, Detroit Trutrac in the rear (awesome) etc, etc, and then a lovely lady decided to drive straight through a stop sign and wipe out the front, bending both chassis rails, which is a mandatory non-repairable wright off...
And sooo...due to some financial issues, I found myself purchasing a '95 HSE with more oil leaks then my old Ser III, a buggered radiator, buggered tyres,
coil conversion, peeling clear coat etc etc, for the princely sum of $3500...yes, I know..I got ripped off...
And now I love this (nearly) 20 year old piece of British engineering even more than my previous Discos. The higher torque and power of the 4.6 is great, especially when towing, and the cabin comforts speak for themselves!
So far I have done:
New radiator, water pump and thermostat.
Sold the 18" Huricanes and fitted 16" Disco 2 alloys with 265/75/16 M/T's.
Changed all drivetrain fluids plus rear diff pinion seal.
Fitted Gen 3, 4 hole fuel injectors, sweet upgrade, got the Ford Mustang 5.0 injectors from USA, second hand, fully recon' and flow tested for about $115 Au.
Converted A/C to Hychill, works great, chills better than most cars I've ever owned.
Fitted manual override switch for thermo fans, so at the flick of a switch both thermos come on at high speed - I usually flick em on whenever I go off-road in warmer temps..ie:summer.
She still had EAS compressor (brand new in 2011... Sweet), valve block etc, after the coil conversion, so I removed the valve block and sensors, fitted a Jamec quick release air fitting (female), piggy backed a cabin switch to operate the compressor at a flick of a switch, and now I have 150 psi air supply for tyre inflation etc. The air tank holds about the required volume of air to pump my 4 tyres from 18 psi to 28 psi, which is perfect to go from gnarly trails or sand, to the blacktop...a larger air tank or possibly piggy backing a second P38 air tank would be a great upgrade.
Well, that's about all I can think of at present. Once again, a huge "thank you" to the site owners, mods, and all you great contributors, the wealth of info is astounding!
Happy Rovering you lot!!
Timmy.

Hi mate,
Welcome to the madhouse, we are all suffering from the same condition here, and loving it.
Sounds like you've already had a chance to get to know your p38, look after her and she will serve you well .
Pictures please!

Thanks for the warm welcome guys.
Yeah, I know Steve, would've been nice to have the EAS, but the PO had already done the coil conversion..what can you do??
Sorry for not posting any pics last night, I'll get onto that right now!

This is after I fitted the Disco 2 16" alloys, sprayed satin black, crappy second hand tyres at this stage though...
I'm afraid I can only attach and post 1 pic at a time, Internet is sooo slow today!

Got the muddies on now (265/75/16 Nexen M/T..very happy with them so far).
Lucky for the guy in the Patrol I happened to be there having a play that day!

Thanks, not as well set up as yours tho..;)
Yep, it's basically LPG. It's a propane/butane mix. Check out the Hychill website, there's plenty of info on the net. A lot of white goods manufacturers are using it in fridges and freezers, it's used a lot in heavy machinery aircons, the last statistic I remember was over 1 million cars in Oz are running it. It's much more environmentally friendly than all the synthetic refrigerants (R134a etc.)
Don't listen to all the nay Sayers nor the scare campaigns instigated by the military industrial complex and the patent holders like DuPont etc.
It works great, the compressor runs at lower head pressures too, and you use less than half the charge weight of R134a.
Cheers.

Hi mate. I've been looking at hychill for a little while myself. Did you find that it cools better than the r134a? My aircon is okay but not great.

Hi mate.
Yes, I reckon it works better. Mine pumps out vent temps of 6 deg C on a fairly hot day, not bad for a 20 yr old system.

Another thing which can be a real bugger to fault find is the a/c evaporator temp sensor. It disengages the compressor before Evap temp gets too low in order to prevent the Evap icing up and blocking air flow.
I'm not certain of the exact temp, prob around 4 deg C.
It's a probe type thermistor, similar to the ambient air temp sensor behind the front bumper.
It is located in the drivers side of the Evap (it's shown in the workshop manual) but the manual (I don't have RAVE) doesn't list the resistance values at various temps.
Anyway, mine is faulty, so it was cutting the a/c compressor out way to early, so I simply backed it out of the recess that it slides into until I was getting Evap temps around 2 deg C before it cut out the compressor, then I secured it in this position with duct tape, cheap fix! And the a/c is working perfectly, sooo chilly!

The guy who did my air-con said he no longer puts Hychill in the P38's because he had problems with it seeping out. Seems it's more prone to that than the R134A.
Mind you my air-con hoses were not in the best shape !

I do remember reading something along those lines Steve, I think it was due to hydrocarbon refrigerants being a smaller molecule or some such thing.
Funnily enough, I recently replaced the suction side flex hose on mine as it had bulged out. I removed the aluminium pipe and hose assembly, took it down to my local Pirtek, and they replaced it with the latest Good Year barrier a/c hose.
Perfect factory finish for less than $30, very happy! I also replaced the o rings at the compressor flange and the pipe union connection when refitting.
I guess I've reduced my possible leakage by 50% now
I do all my own a/c work anyway (I was a marine engineer in the Navy, so HVAC was part of my job) and I have a vac pump and gauge set etc, so is easy for me to do a top up or evacuation and recharge if required.
Cheers.

Tis a shame I'm over east and you west otherwise I'd get you to do hychill on mine. Everyone here thinks it comes from a witches brew or something and will magically blow up your vehicle.

Yep...a lot of scaremongering re hydrocarbon refrigerants, fact is, its use has been around since the dawn of refrigeration, it's just the huge chemical companies managed to monopolise the market with their proprietary stuff, giving "incentives" to manufacturers and service companies, and instigating underhanded negative marketing campaigns against anything else.
If you look at the propellant on your deodorant can or most any other aerosol, you'll see it is propane, butane, isobutane, or any mix of those, or simply hydrocarbon (so all the same basically) and how many TONNES of that are released into the atmosphere on a daily basis?? Can't be that bad for the environment, hey?! The facts quite simply speak for themselves, all the naysayers are obviously ignorant of the true facts and are simply regurgitating rumours and old housewive tales :p
But hey, each to their own, I love Hychill, and everyone is free to use what they prefer :)

Yep agree with you totally. I'm going to have a go redoing the rangie plus one of our old split systems at home with the hychill stuff. Anyway welcome 😀

When he first recharged my system he used hychill and it didn't last long sadly. He did add some dye which meant i could see the seepage from my air-con hoses. When I replaced the hoses we went back to the RC134A
If my hoses had been in good shape Hychill may have been fine, as it is the air-con is icy when it needs to be.

Yep, all valid points gents.
I guess in older vehicles like ours, it would be a good idea to replace the flexible rubber hose sections prior to using Hychill. Pretty cheap to do as I detailed a few posts back...then the system should be good to go..obviously after checking for any leaks elsewhere. I like to leave it on the vac pump for 5 or 6 hours and then isolate it and leave it overnight to make sure it holds vacuum.
I've been running Hychill in my P38a for several months now, and apart from the bulged compressor suction hose I replaced (no doubt due to hydrocarbon refrigerants propensity to permeate old hoses as mentioned earlier by Steve) and she's been sweet.
But as you say Steve, R134a will of course also be perfectly fine, after all, the system was designed for it!

Hi Benji.
Hychill advise to use 30% of the R134a by weight, so for a P38 that's 375 grams, but from memory I put in a bit more, think it was just under 500g, and that's going off head and suction pressures as well as vent and evaporator temps.
I recently did a couple of mates cars, a Jackerpoo and a 100 series Toymota, just going off gauge pressures, and they're working great.
Hychill supply 300 & 450g cans (which you need an adapter for) and 4.5 & 9kg cylinders (but you have to pay a rather exorbitant deposit on the cylinder).
Over here the retailers are Bursons, Veale & a couple others I think.
Check out their website and wotnot, lots of info.
Crikey:o just realised I'm starting to sound like a pushy sales rep! Which of course I'm not, just sharing my experiences and hoping to help someone save a few Oxford Scholars.
Automotive a/c repairs aren't cheap nowadays, and because hydrocarbon gasses are naturally occurring, anyone can use them without licenses etc. But don't forget, you can't legally work on a system if it still has a fluorocarbon gas in it.
Cheers.

just a note about hychill:
if you're in a car crash and the fire brigade rock up, make your you tell them you have hychill in your aircon as they want to know.
i wont get into the merits/myths about is hychill safe.
