off set rims

I have been offered for when i get my Defender a set of 40mm offset Landrover Discovery series 1 rims , my question is ...

would that offset be ok for the Defender , and in the future i would also like to run 255X85X16 tires [went to Tyrepower today for advise ] and they had no idea on offset rims .

The offset rims will allow you to run wider tyres, that size is about the largest you can go without too much rubbing, a lift would be good though.

If you are planning on getting a 110 you should bear in mind that Discovery wheels are not rated for the full load they can get on a 110. OK on a 90.

I would buy them if they are at a reasonable price. They hold their value very well.

when i bought my alloys there was only 3 rated rims to suit my car
and if they aint rated dont worry about paying your insurance :wink:

Discovery wheels are not designed for the maximum load of a 110 or 130. Hence it is illegal to use them, although you are extremely unlikely to get caught. However, there is a very real possibility of wheel failure if you carry heavy loads, and in the event of an accident, even if the wheels are not involved, you can expect your insurer to disown you unless you have an engineer's certificate - and you are unlikely to get that.

Thats interesting.Is it the same story when using them on a Series vehicle?????I would guess a series vehicle has a lower GVM????

JDNSW Can you clarify whether you are speaking of alloy rims or the standard steel disco rims - which are seen VERY frequently on Defenders.

Luckily disco rims are made by Dunlop - nice and thick steel, i would use them on a 110, heaps of guys use them offset and i've never heard of a failure.
