View Full Version : Using your Second Name as your "Preferred Name"

Hello All,
Just wondering how many people use their second name as your "preferred" name?
I remember that I used to buy plant nursery supplies from a bloke whose first name was the same as mine - Lionel, however he used his second name instead.
The reason for this was based on a tragic event. At the exact time he was being born his father was in the same hospital and died as consequence of a work place accident. His mother named him in honour of his late father. As soon as the person I knew could he started using his second name as his preferred name.
Do other members here use their second name as their preferred name? If so why?
By the way, my second name is Glenn :)
Kind Regards
Lionel

I had a great aunt call me by a different name when I first met her when I was about 5 years old. I was shocked when I found out this was in fact my first name. 50 years on and still really don't know why my middle name is my first name. I have an uncle (other side of the family) who is in the same boat.

My Fathers name is Gerald, but prefered Barry, he didn't want the nickname Jerry, knowone used any of his names anyway, everyone called him Paddy;)
I have a couson called Miller(my mothers maiden name) but his real name is Daniel, same as his Father, but everyone calls him Jack, his middle name is John:eek:
I can tell you it becomes very annoying when trying to track down people in the family tree searches:twisted:

Hello Redback,
It must have been a generational thing. I got annoyed when the priest said what I thought was the wrong first name for my Grandmother, at her funeral. Family and friends always called her "Nancy". Her real name was Anne! I also had a great-uncle who was always called "Blue" - although his name was Kevin - have a guess why! Blue had a brother who was always called "Shotter" despite his name being Harold.
Kind Regards
Lionel

Our youngest daughter whose name is Alexandra has resolutely maintained that she will be called Lexi to the point where her school reports all arrive with Lexi at the top.
I guess it's just a case of repeating it often enough and it becomes fact.....

This makes it very hard to trace your family tree when you are using birth/Christening/marriage/death certificates when searching Archives.
My Grandmother on my Paternal side name was Eurie on her certificates, but everyone only knew her by Esther. So when you are looking for an "Esther" when everything is under "Eurie" makes it very hard.
Also tracing a local family here 2 of the Males had the exact same name, one was from the American side of the family, so he was called Yankee Jack, Regards frank.

I had an "Uncle" Dave - who wasn't a real Uncle and whose real name was' nt David it was Clarence. He didn't have any other Christian names. He drove trucks for the Council so I guess he felt Clarence didn't suit?

My son's name is James Henry, but he's known as Harry. He got his first name due to tradition (every eldest male for as far as we can trace has been called James, with the exception of my dad, whose middle name is James - eldest from second marriage, long story). His middle name comes from my wife's grandfather, who's a legend. I didn't want a junior, so James was out, and we prefer Harry (the accepted alternative) to Henry. If it's good enough for a prince...
You should see the looks on people's faces when they hear that story.
If he ever tells us he doesn't like it and decides to either change to something else or change his paperwork to match reality I won't lose any sleep.
My dad's mum went by Dulcy, but her name was Gertrude Dulcy. Or so we thought. Turns out her birth certificate said Gertha Gonzaga. We reckon her old man had a few on his way from the goldfields to the registry in Gympie. He must have celebrated at every camp along the way for that to have happened.

Never trust a man with a black hat, or a man with two first names.
My first name is mitchell and i shorten this to mitch. But my last name is too odd to confuse with anything but!

Both my father and one of my nieces were/are always known by their middle names. In both cases, it was apparently because the two names the parents decided on were easier to pronounce in that order, because of the combination of first/last letters, but they still stuck to the decided primary name, even though it was now the second name.
As an interesting variant, my brother-in-law was christened Ian McL...., but when he started work, he became known as "Sandy" because of his Scottish ancestry. Some years later, the workplace acquired another "Sandy", so to distinguish the two, he was named "Sandy Mac", which soon degenerated into "Sandy Mick" and by the time he became engaged to my sister, it was just "Mick", although some of his old friends still called him "Sandy", and his sister always called him "Ian".

My mother was known as Margaret although her name was Noelene Margaret, after she separated from my father she started using Noelene and hyphenated her married name with her maiden name. My BIL is Bruce Wayne but goes by Wayne. My Grandfather was Donald John but everyone called him Jack most of his eight brothers also went by different names.

I think that happened a lot back then. My auntie was Patricia Grace but was called Jenny and she married a Pom called Thomas Henry who was called Peter. My dad was named Jack, no middle name just Jack. He was the youngest of 9 and none of the others used the names they were given so my grand parents said bugger it and didn't even try with his name. He's the only one who goes by his name. :D

I have a student whose first and second names are identical, thanks to an error by a UN official. I'm not allowed to reveal student names, so I can't post the actual names.
As for myself, my second name was my father's first name, and I've never used it for myself.
