I have one of the ex military 110's which is now dripping fuel.Took to a LR mechanic and was told leak is between the two 'skins' - new tank $4400 plus labour !!
Does anyone know if these tanks be repaired/coated inside/replacement tanks at a reasonable cost ? If so who in Melb might do these works ?

$4400?
Thats a huge profit, the Perentie main tank looks like a 90/110 tank but as a different bend in it, thus for some reason its very expensive, but nothing like you have been quoted. Drop me a PM we have both L/R hand tanks avaiable.

There are lots of places for the tank to leak. Rust between the stone guard and tank is only one place. Others include the steel filler tube can crack, where the top and bottom halves spot weld together, the external bend for the steel pick up or return line can crack.
I had a bad leak which was a cracked pick up tube from memory. However I also had leaks in the other mentioned places.
I got Barnsey in Birdsville to do a temporary welding fix, cost $150 from memory. I removed & refitted the tank myself.
After getting home I eventually took it out, put it in the bath & pressurised the tank with compressed air to identify the leaks, washed the inside, welded it some more, filled other areas with liquid metal, and coated the inside with a product called Redcote.
It's been good for about 3 years now. I think I did a tutorial on here about it.

thanks for that. No good on the mechanical side so will need to find someone local ( Melb). Loving the car....not the leak !

There are any number of tank sealer products, not all as expensive as POR. (Although some aviation spec products can be more expensive.)
Another brand is the Aussie made KBS coatings Auto Fuel Tank Sealer Kit (http://www.kbs-coatings.com.au/product/auto-fuel-tank-sealer-kit/)

Since it a diesel tank it is fairly safe to repair if you can find someone willing. As long as it is not swiss cheese you can do the repairs using copper sheet and soldering or brazing.

tank out is about an hours work 3 if it fights
cleaning is a bit of a pain. POR 15 is a good way to go but you can also sweat seal the tank if the holes are small. when you put the skin back on the bottom of the tank clean all the paint off of the mating faces and coat them both heavily with plastic tool dip while its wet clamp them together and then fill in the side gaps. The most common cause of leaks on the tank is crap getting caught between the skin and the base and either abrading through or rusting through.
An abrasion can be repaired from the outside between the skins, rust through should be delt with from the inside.

It's not complicated to remove and refit. Empty the tank. Disconnect the hoses under seat and the wires to the sender. Disconnect filler tube. Unbolt tank from rear mount. Remove or loosen front mount and unbolt tank from front mount. Drop tank to the ground and remove.

Is it dripping constantly or just when the tank is completely full (e.g. just after filling up)

I removed my drivers tank last night as it leaks the worst there is a very large gap at bottom of tank between guard and tank a good thumb width sized gap that was filled with silicon.
I think it would be wise to completely remove the guard repair tank cleaning out the mountain of gravel and crap I have between the two before attaching guard back to tank and resealing it abit better (even if another piece needs to be welded to the guard to reduce gap)
My issue begins however with the guard being spot welded to the tank around the center seam, I have seen another tank that has rivets where I have spot welds I'm thinking maybe welds have been drilled out previously during a rebuild.
Seeking ideas and suggestions black knight seems to have allot of experience with these vehicles along with other members of this forum what would be your suggestions

The holes at the bottom will be small. I was surprised how the inside of my tank was quite clean rather than corroded. I would give it 2-3 coats of Redkote. I would bother removing the guard.

At $4,400 you could almost buy another whole vehicle at auction! Probably a wrecked one would be a lot less than that ;)

Can you let us all know where non-wrecked perenties are available a around $4.5K? The cheapest perentie on the Nov Eastern seaboard sales was a little over $7K and the wrecks seem to only be auctioned at Minto. A wrecked perentie would have to be transported as general freight to Melbourne as car carriers only move vehicles that drive. So in the end a wreck may cost you a lot more than $4.4K. (No wrecks at the Dec '15 Minto auction)
Ring Hilton Pollard at Colo Heights NSW (02) 4565 0212 and see if he has one out of one of their wrecks.
BTW: East Coast Nov 2015 results. http://www.aulro.com/afvb/general-chat/228162-graysonline-east-coast-perentie-results-2.html#post2453350

I cant quite remember what I paid for mine but it was just over $2k and cost me about $3k buy the time I paid fees and got it home. And with a new battery it has been working hard on the farm for almost 2 years now. It had full log books, low km. Ok one day ill need to buy a new windscreen surround, canopy and some door tops. But I got a motor, gearbox diffs, chassis, most panels.
Keep talking the price up Lotz-A;)

I bought a FFR in excellent condition from the Adelaide Auctions last year for a fraction over $6K (I think it was $6100 or something). Half of the vehicle was refurbished and in mint condition - even the canopy canvas was great.
I was only saying, that if you were going to pay $4.5K for a fuel tank, you might as well spend a bit more and get a whole car.....

The cheapest one at the most recent Vic auction (Nov) was drive away $7,086.44 (final bid price $6,109.00) and both may still have leaky tanks and what do you do with the rest of the vehicle. Buy another tank?
As I said contact someone like Hilton or Justin Pollard who are wrecking perenties, you're taking a risk on leaks but still better than $4.4K new or the cost of another vehicle and freight on that.

How about just ripping it out entirely and using an aftermarket sill tank? I'm thinking I'll try something along those lines when the original packs it in

I guess it all depends on how original you want to keep it. Personally I would look for a s/h tank as Diana said and keep it original. I reckon eventually some new tanks will hit the market on Grays.

I was lucky enough to score a NOS perentie tank in a pallet of parts sold through Graysonline. It was part of the AAMME excess stock but I thought it was an SIII tank when I bid.
Given the number of people with tank issues I'll be holding onto it for when mine packs up.

talking to a guy who used to run the maintenance for them at Enogerra Barracks a while back. Apparently it's pretty common for the to rust out on top too.
Mud and crap gets up on there and it's not a location that's cleaned much.
Too my drivers seat out and it was solid mud that was dry as a rock. had to chip it out with a cold chisel. nice and clean with a good coat of Lanolin on it now.
Something to keep in mind for those who like a spot of mudding.
