View Full Version : Speeding up turbo boost - how to?

So I have tuned up my fuel pump on 300 tdi, slightly advanced, resulting in cooler exhaust gases, and therefore, slower boost build up. Before it used to shoot up almost instantly as I hit the go pedal, now, I can feel the delay.
How do I get my turbo to spool up faster now? More fuel? I'm talking before wastegate comes into play.
Thanx!!!

More fuel.
If it's a 300Tdi, there's a few simple pump tweaks.

Are you talking about smoke screw star wheel and diapraghm?

Ian's tutorial is the best I've seen. ;)

Yup. Have that document and had my pump tuned up already. But it looks like it will need more tweaking since the pump advance.
Thanx for advice all!

The real fix is a Turbo Technics VNT, or compounds if you like to fabricate and fiddle.

But it is also a $ figure that I can't justify. So I'll tune it up best I can with what I have.

I hear ya. ;)
I've actually just backed mine off in the last week, just too much soot, but I'm already missing the initial bottom end, particularly as I'm running 255/85's

When you say backed off you mean fueling? My initial take off reluctancy is back as well. Maybe that's another sign for more fuel.

I can confirm that the addition of LPG was the quickest way to get 20% increase in HP and torque and without the aircond, so much quicker to get off the mark.

LPG would be good. But another costly upgrade. I'll report back once I tweak the pump a bit more.
Thnax for advices again!

Before I added the gas, I removed the large centre muffler ... that helped, and made very little difference to the exhaust noise.
Re gas and the real $ involved ... forum member: Bee utey would be worth contacting, as he did my system.

Hi All,
Thread hi-jack alert!;)
What sort of 'cricket ground'* dollars are we talking for an LPG system on a 300Tdi Discovery these days?

The 300TDi being sold before the current crop of emissions regs can be done with a simple vapour delivery system, using a throttled down petrol system LPG converter. Costs are from $1500 and upwards, depends on a lot of different factors, mainly the cost and location of the LPG cylinder. Space under a disco is at a premium and the gap under the RH sill can only take a very small cylinder. Full electronic metering systems were developed for common rail diesels and cost a lot more, say $3K and up.
