At last, I've moved on after 13 years of P38A ownership and fettling.
My new ride is an Adriatic Blue 2004 V8 L322 Vogue with 191,000km on the clock.

Nice 'Vouge'. :D

Very nice Ron, glad it didn't result in a stint in the dog house. How does it compare to the P38a?

They seem like they're getting on well together. It'd be a shame to split them up now so you'd better clear that garage out to make way for one of them.

Well, as I'm trying to sell the P38A, i'd have to say the P38A is far superior. :D
I bought the L322 from a local retired real estate agent, Tom Williams of Pullman Williams. KLR Auto put me on to it. They've been servicing it ever since he bought it so I have its service history available to me.
Dunno why he spent so much money to put premium numberplates on it after transferring his personaiised plates to his new RRS. They cost $440 according the myplates website.
We dropped into KLR yesterday on the way back from Guide Dogs and I told Matt we were off to Crackenback today. I meant to say for a shakedown run - but it came out as "breakdown run". :(

Be sure to report back on the 'breakdown run' once you've safely got it back home off the tilt tray. :D

Well, Ron has asked me to inform you all he is sitting at Lake Crakenback having a beer. - with no wi-fi. He made the trip without issue - in the mighty P38....
Ron's propensity to buy faulty goods continues and the new acquisition failed just 25km into the trip this morning. He nursed it home before loading up the P38 for a second attempt.
I'll let Ron fill you in on the details, but unfortunately it really was a 'breakdown run'. :(

Hi Ron,
Hope all went ok with your car. Despite having a few teething when I first got my L322 it is by far the best landy I have owned. And being diesel I don't miss the fuel consumption on the P38!

The gearbox won't change up higher than, I think, 3rd. I limped home at about 60km/h and 3,000+ rpm. Trying Sport mode didn't help.
I'm glad it didn't happen hundreds of km from home.
The trans is apparently still under warranty.

I hope it's in warranty.
I was talking to an auto trans guy in town about one of these he had on his hoist.
I was told that a reconditioned 'box for one of these came in at $18K. No wonder it had been on his hoist for 2 weeks awaiting repair!

The Trans seems to be the Achilles Heel of L322's!
I thought it was only the diesels that were the main concern, but obviously not.
Sad, because the rest of the car is pretty bullet proof. We had zero issues on our TD6 over 130,000Kms.

It was the other way around when the cars were new. We replaced dozens of autos behind the V8 & the Td6 didn't give an ounce of trouble in dealership land.

Sorry to hear Ron,I hope its something easily sorted.
We were going to buy a L322 for Deb,after a good chat with JustinC we decided against it.The gearbox issues with them was the main concern, and the only ones in our price range at the time had too many km.

I really HATE the fact the best looking LR ever has the bodgyest engine/gearbox combo.
Imagine Mr ZF's face when MR LR said "We want to put that box behind these two engines,,, Mr ZF smiles and says,, No sir, they are not rated for these engines, NO warranty!
Mr LR smiles that special smile and says,, new RR's dont get flogged, we'll be fine!"
and then they talk $$$

I don't know what happens to the ZFs now that the cars are older but when they were new, it was a restriction/blockage in the radiator (with built in transmission cooler IIRC) causing the fluid to overheat & killing the transmission. ZF supplied a changeover box & a new radiator was fitted so the car was usually only off the road for a few days.
Once the radiator issue was sorted, the ZFs never had an issue from where I sat.

My plan is to check the car with Autologic and look at the fluid. The lack of a dipstick makes it a bit harder.
It appears there is an external trans cooler. I wonder if it should be replaced. The little I've found so far indicates it can block.

If the transmission is under warranty, let KLR check the oil & they can sort out the warranty side of things.
Maybe double check that the warranty is transferable too before KLR let the repairer know the car has a new owner.

All in hand. KLR own the Autologic. I'll be going there tomorrow.

The TD6 has a thermostat in the trans cooler - assume the V8 would too.

The report back from the trans people is a blocked cooler and the fluid leak was from the breather.
Dunno what this will cost. :(

Doubtful. KLR, who have serviced the car since the bloke bought it, told me that had he known about the problem, he would have had it fixed. He's that sort of bloke.
This arvo, when I picked it up, a mechanic who works there (not one of KLR's owners) told me I had bought a good vehicle. He'd worked on it many times and the owner was meticulous about fixing things.
To buy, the L322 cost me $9,000 (not taking into account the money I sold the P38A for) less than I paid for the P38A in 2002. Depreciation is a terrible thing for the first buyer!
