Thought I would start a thread on preparing our Heritage 90 for a trip around Australia - don't know when but in the next 2 years or so. So to start off I am going to carpet the rear area then install a drawer system/raised floor set up.

So far I have just installed a carpet over the rubber mat:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2015/12/726.jpg (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/jodel1050/media/Heritage%2090/P1030369_zps2hn6oqsj.jpg.html)

I did remove the rubber mat to use as a template for the marine carpet I purchased from Bunnings. Green but not quite Grasmere green!

A quick snip with the kitchen scissors & installed back in over the rubber mat:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2015/12/727.jpg (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/jodel1050/media/Heritage%2090/P1030371_zpskltnxgfg.jpg.html)

Left over bits will be installed over the wheel arches, but seats will have to come out to accomplish this. Maybe a job for next year as it is getting warm in the garage/shed.

Beautiful Rover! Wish we could get that in the States.

What type of tow hitch is that? Does it have a part number? My 110 has a longranger tank... Looks like that one might fit.

If it's the Long Ranger tank that ARB sells then ARB have a (Hayman Reese?) fitment that will work (or at least the did when I was last looking at their tanks).

In Northam shire part of the week & Belmont shire the other. We have clocked up 2000kms in the first month, mainly on the Gt Eastern Hwy, although it has been to the city, Nedlands, Swan Valley & Canning Vale, and regular trips to Midland.

He does get around. It's strange that most times we take the Defender we seldom see another Defender. If we take the Peugeot we see hundreds & only occasionally get a wave back - they must think who's that strange dude waving from a Pug?

Christmas lunch today with some old Land Rover friends in Canning Vale:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2015/12/527.jpg (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/jodel1050/media/Heritage%2090/Lunch_zps9f9gpuun.jpg.html)

Someone commented that I had a nice trailer! Which is actually a very nice 1953 80".

The only addition today was installation of a small blind spot mirror on the drivers side. Compared to the 110 I find there is a very bad blind spot, which can hide a complete vehicle behind the 'B' pillar, which is a lot wider on the 90.

Ya can definitely see the likeness!.....after 68 yrs!!
Don't know of another vehicle where this is the case?.....Maybe the original VW Beetle, but I don't believe that even it, retained its basic shape for this long?

Very impressed with your collection.
All look great.

+ The Xtreme has a great colour (replace the front springs)
+ The rangie looks very original. (couldnt see the queen though )
+ The 107!!! (embarassed - didnt know there was a 107, I thought it was 109)

Hugh looks the part in all the photos. The only thing out of the ordinary is the front vents.

Any chance you will show some pics grinding the vents open on Hugh?

The extreme springs are just fine for 325,000+kms. Good for another 200k at least.

The RRC is totally original & has recently clocked 42,000kms since new. The Queen prefers Defers.

The 107 is my favourite Series, & has a useful payload & lots of storage.

As for Hugh he doesn't need vents as he has the best aircon - much better than the RRC & TD5, which also has the vents.:)

L.H. Mudflap?....It's "OK",.....Just.
I usually sit on around 95kph on the highway,....maybe a bit slow for some, but Ok on backroads.
I believe it's on higher throttle openings, when the engine's working hard, combined with higher speed creating greater deflection of the mudflap, that this problem occurs,...sitting on 95ks seems to have negated the issue about 80%,...after 35,000ks, there's only a slight distortion of the top LH corner of the flap!!

same here, mine was fine until I did a trip towing a coupla ton (ok ok 3t...) at 100 - 110kph... then it died in a couple hundred kms. Had that replaced and dont drive so fast or tow as heavy and havn't buggered another one - up to 50000kms now.

Well the molten mudflap was really starting to look bad & so something had to be done as a temporary fix until my new mudflap arrives:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2015/12/241.jpg (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/jodel1050/media/Heritage%2090/P1030395_zpszim6arcl.jpg.html)

The melted area just kept getting larger.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/01/750.jpg (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/jodel1050/media/Heritage%2090/P1030396_zpsittcijax.jpg.html)

So I cut the melted area off with some aircraft grade tin snips, then with a little effort managed to install some 17 x 11mm black pinch weld. This just clips on with a hard push & has now been there for 400kms with no sign of melting or falling off. This product is available from Clark Rubber at about $10.00/mtr.

Still not sure what to do with the new mudflap but most probably will go the checker plate backing as found on AULRO search, although pinch weld wrapped all the way around the mudflap may also work, just don't want to ruin another one finding out if it doesn't work.:)

Pickles2

Hi Pickles, I'm quite happy for the moment, & it certainly looks better than the burnt bit. The description is as I described pinch weld 17 x 11mm. Comes on a great big roll & they sell it by the mtr length or part thereof. It is rubber but with metal inserts that I believe help with heat absorption. I had to open it up with a wide blade screw driver at the corners & then crimp it on with pliers to get a grip. No problem on the straight runs.

It is usually on the back wall with all the other rubber strip products, they have a lot of different sections, door seals, square, rectangle etc. Also some great products for sealing Series 1 doors, mine is almost dust/rain proof.:D

YOLO110
24th December 2015, 09:14 AM
I looked at the Heritage mudflaps... I don't think they are not the same robust construction as the latest ones on my 5 month old 90 SW... the rubber seems softer and bends more easily... I also think the fixing at the top is different...

I have done 3000km in my 90 at 'good' motorway speeds... and not a hint of melting!

Hope you get it sorted... that is a pain mate...

Nigel to his word called in last week and showed me his "HUGH".

Great looking Defender up close, didnt realizse the paint work is actually metallic!

and just to add info for Nigel, its still a CAT on the exhaust and not a DPF/DPD, I had thought perhaps the last of the TDCi 2.2lt might be DPF equipped as like the ones in ROW, but not. There is a blanking plug on the exhaust manifold, I would assume DPF/DPD equipped vehicles use this for the sensor.

So Land Rover Defender all good to the end.....

It was looking very poorly so I took a pair of tin snips to the molten dripping piece & crimped a piece of pinch weld to smarten it up. I have since had to bond this with silastic adhesive & now all is good until I get my replacement mudflap:

I was going to get a glove box from the UK but postage was outright shocking, so I made one over the past two days:

Removed dash pad from the cover, fiddly spring clips, but patience & a small screw driver & they do come off. Styrofoam pad is stored for future installation if reverted back to standard. Measure from the vehicle & draw up on graph paper:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/07/76.jpg (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/jodel1050/media/Heritage%2090/20160110_114542_zpstxk6spic.jpg.html)

Transferred to thin aluminium sheet:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/07/77.jpg (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/jodel1050/media/Heritage%2090/20160110_135300_zpsj9mmh8ok.jpg.html)

Cut out with tin snips:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/07/78.jpg (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/jodel1050/media/Heritage%2090/20160110_151155_zpspbdwr8yl.jpg.html)

Holes drilled for rivets & dash lid, then painted with etch primer & matt black acrylic. Edged with small size pinch weld to prevent cuts on the sharp edges which were deburred but still quite sharp, as I only had 0.5mm thick alloy in the shed. Pinch weld also stiffens this up:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/07/79.jpg (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/jodel1050/media/Heritage%2090/20160112_103027_zpsxr6le46b.jpg.html)

Install front plate with two small self tappers:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/07/80.jpg (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/jodel1050/media/Heritage%2090/20160112_103910_zpsdtc9cl7m.jpg.html)

It is the standard cover for the Heritage steering wheel. It's OK but I'm going to replace it with a snap off Exmoor Trim wheel I have waiting in the wings!

Hi pablo, I had the same problem because I tied them the logical way as below:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/02/96.jpg (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/jodel1050/media/Heritage%2090/P1030904_zpshd7mghqg.jpg.html)

robbo put me straight as you have to run the ties as below. I just changed my drivers squab to the correct set up. I had managed to fit it, but it took a lot of force. Is dead easy now:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/02/97.jpg (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/jodel1050/media/Heritage%2090/P1030905_zpsxhvqmxcq.jpg.html)

So ties go over & under first. Hope this helps.

As well as the mudflap melting problem caused by the exhaust stream, the white logo goes sooty black as well. I have found that the tyre marker pens work to make them look new again. White CRC marker pen is the go:

There are only 3 bolts (8mm) holding the flap to the crossmember, so I will just keep it for shows. My short term repair with pinch weld is holding up well & with the white tyre marker I can make it look almost like new.

This came from 4X4Overlander.com in the UK but is the Nakatanenga product. Again helpful service & looks like a ram xgripIII will fit an iPad 3 & maybe an iPad mini in its case.

Anderson Plug for air compressor, solar panel charger, fridge, etc. Slotted hole cut in battery cover to facilitate installation - it's just a cover!:

I was going to get a glove box from the UK but postage was outright shocking, so I made one over the past two days:

Removed dash pad from the cover, fiddly spring clips, but patience & a small screw driver & they do come off. Styrofoam pad is stored for future installation if reverted back to standard. Measure from the vehicle & draw up on graph paper:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/07/76.jpg (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/jodel1050/media/Heritage%2090/20160110_114542_zpstxk6spic.jpg.html)

Transferred to thin aluminium sheet:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/07/77.jpg (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/jodel1050/media/Heritage%2090/20160110_135300_zpsj9mmh8ok.jpg.html)

Cut out with tin snips:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/07/78.jpg (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/jodel1050/media/Heritage%2090/20160110_151155_zpspbdwr8yl.jpg.html)

Holes drilled for rivets & dash lid, then painted with etch primer & matt black acrylic. Edged with small size pinch weld to prevent cuts on the sharp edges which were deburred but still quite sharp, as I only had 0.5mm thick alloy in the shed. Pinch weld also stiffens this up:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/07/79.jpg (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/jodel1050/media/Heritage%2090/20160112_103027_zpsxr6le46b.jpg.html)

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/07/80.jpg (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/jodel1050/media/Heritage%2090/20160112_103910_zpsdtc9cl7m.jpg.html)

With thanks to a austastar for his post of June 2010 on installing the longer Wolf style mirror arms. With a caravan arriving in the next couple of months I ordered a set of the longer arm, & on this wet Saturday decided it was time to install:

So forwarned by austatstar that these hinge bolts do not have captive nuts, I made a plasticard lock tool & blue tac with some extra shims of plasticard jammed between the nuts & door skin:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/08/1034.jpg (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/jodel1050/media/Heritage%2090/Locknuts_zpsi2jsykp6.jpg.html)

Removed the bolts folded out the hinge to reveal not a lot of Grasmere green paint under the hinge, some extra hairy stuff & paint through to metal on the door presumable from the rubber gasket:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/08/1035.jpg (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/jodel1050/media/Heritage%2090/Hughhinge_zpsbxtkvwil.jpg.html)

You can also see the two phillips screws which secure the arms to the hinge. I have coated all of this with ACF-50 so hopefully corrosion will not be an issue!

Installed the mirror arms & bolted up the hinge. There is a rubber gasket between the hinge & the door, one on the L/H side & 2 on the drivers side!

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/08/1036.jpg (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/jodel1050/media/Heritage%2090/Longarm_zpseqcdvqgu.jpg.html)

Photo above to illustrate the difference in length, which is 130mm.

Finished job, & the mirrors only protrude 50mm further out when folded back to the normal driving position:

Went for a country drive to test out the iPad with the recently dowloaded Hema Explorer. I am impressed with the features I have discovered so far, the Points Of Interest are a real treat. Could only load, West Australia, NT & South Australia so far, as the old iPad doesn't have enough free space, but can remove some states & add the others when we need them.

Also took a photo of the Garmin GPS in reverse camera mode. I'm very happy with this as it should make hooking up a trailer or the caravan a piece of cake. The range bars have also been set so with the green line up against an object the Defender is a foot away from whatever is inline. Previously I always seemed to park yards away!

Trip was great!

Took the 'short cut' across the Nullarbor... my health precluded doing the Great Central Road mate...

We saw some amazing things, whales at 'The Head of the Bight' well worth the stop.

Hooked up randomly with many other 'grey (bald!) Nomads' all doing the same thing. Only saw ONE other Defender on the whole crossing...

I was towing my 800kg loaded camper trailer... at 110kph all the way. And got about 330km per tank! (old money that was 18 mpg which I think was pretty good...) I carried 100L of additional diesel in the trailer so was 'comfortable' to stretch the range of the OEM tiny tank in the 90. I pushed the fuel needle very deep into the empty zone once... got 364km and filled up with 53.7 litres! So I had only about 1.3 litres left assuming the 55 Litre tank size!

I drove 3,655 km from Melbourne to Perth... mudflap mod (see another thread) worked a treat... no sign of any melting at all :)

Great experience... the '90' Defender tows with no issues at all. I hardly noticed the weight/size of my camper trailer behind me at all, 6th gear with no problems.

Once I get through my health condition, I am looking forward to doing some great trips around W.A... ;)

Great news Pete. You should have a 60 ltr tank, so probably had 11 litres left. Good news about the mudflap mod as well, and hope you are getting over your health issues. Our van arrives sometime next month so hoping to tour a bit of wildflower area if it's not too late in September.
