Gotta be better than a rapid, unplanned decent.

unplanned descents aren't so bad its those unplanned stops and plane/planet interactions I worry about.

Yes .
It was not our plane we were heading east. It was the other plane on the tarmac.
Bit since Qantas does ba swap in Alice our connection was canceled.
Big claps for the Qantas staff.
Not easy trying to deal with 90 odd tourists. Fifo workers etc.
But good call by our Aussie engineers.
To ground the plane. I do wonder if our Asian based air carriers would do the same
But thats for another post.

Reminds me of a conversation I overheard in 1966 when I was flying from Alice to the Simpson. It was between ATC in Alice and an Alitalia stretched DC-8 heading for Sydney. The forecast they had just received for Sydney was going to require a diversion, and as at that date the only runways long enough were Sydney and Alice Springs, it looked like they would have to land there.
ATC confirmed they could get customs and immigration available, and fuel no problem, but when the captain asked about overnight accommodation for 260 pax+crew.......

While in the SADF back in the 80's I was on military transport from Ondangwa to Johannesburg when suddenly there was this blue flash of light that seemed to travel down the length of the plane, the lights went out and almost immediately the emergency lights kicked in. When we landed in JHB after disembarking from the rear and collecting our kit we walked past the nose and saw both pilots looking at an approx 2m gash in the paintwork just below cockpit windows. We had been struck by lightning. Exciting experience. That "blue flash " is something I struggle to describe but at the same time can't forget it.

Worse places than Alice to overnightdde00
The Police plane had to divert and wait at Hermansburg for a few hrs.
One of our planes managed to slip through the storms with minor diversions while I had many twists and turns to get in.
Oh you should get out of bed right now too, the Todd River is flowing.. Not huge but still a novelty.

Like Strangy said, there's worse places to be stranded than Alice :D
Besides, with the weather the way it is (semi-tropical, at least for us!) it lends itself nicely to a beverage :D
