Loading the rack

Hi Guys,

heading to the Simpson next near.

So trying to think of the best way to pack the roof rack and reduce drag in the Beast,

i will have on the rack 3x double jerry can holders roof top tent a swag and a low profile space case still to buy.

would a wind deflector help

yes a wind deflector will help somewhat, but you've already overloaded the roof limit by the time you put the 3 full jerries and the rack on.

to get the drag down you need to take care of the leading and trailing edges, keep it low and keep all the items together, foam packing the space between the roof and the rack at the edges and if its a rack made of arc mesh lining it with shade cloth and zip tying it down will help

Taper the tail edge of the load as best you can. if you cover it with a tarp, package it out with cloths and bedding and the like to stop the tarp from flapping.

Does that mean you will be taking six 20l jerryies?

Don't know what part of the Simpson you are going, but i doubt you will need six.

We used about 120 litres from memory Mt Dare-Birdsville in our 300Tdi auto Disco. Do you really need 6 x 20 litre drums on roof? Lot of weight. We carried 3 and I quickly got them into the tank. Can you get the fuel down lower? Very happy now that our Defender has a 120 litre main tank.
Rather than a tarp that will flap use a mesh net like for a trailer. Centre the weight.

Its is 2x double jerry and 1x 45l water container

for this trip in need diesel for 800Km of desert x 8 days so plan on taking 180L roughly

We have not done any KM tests yet a tank has always been enough for Moreton

Lotta weight on a roof rack. Could the water fit in the vehicle?
On our Simpson trip an overloaded rack on a Triton came off and punched a hole in the roof.
What weight is your roof rated to hold? Its often a maximum of about 150kg or so.
