Currently under construction in Chile. It will be the most powerful survey telescope ever built.:D

Looks like our knowledge of the universe is about to be expanded. Good find!. Also good is the news people at home can get involved via their home computer.

More good news, Australia will be involved, possibly thru real time transmission of info. from the LSST.

Yes Bob, the steps forward in scientific knowledge we are making nowadays is truly mind boggling. As I have said before, we live in exciting times. At long last we are getting the technology to prove or disprove Einsteins GR theories on gravitational waves. Einstein was so far ahead with his theories that it is just now we are getting the technology to test the theories.:D

Just thought I would mention the LIGO detector experiment to test for gravitational waves.:D

My greatest fear is, I'm going to be left behind. The World is moving too fast, I can barely keep up. Not that that worries me too much, my boilermaker mate & I are going to transform the 7x4 trailer I built, into a customized camping trailer. Give me a sandy beach, esky, fishing rod, SWMBO, to hell with the World.

Wow!, I'm packing the trailer , off to secret beach. Me no savey that fella.
Star Wars is no longer far fetched, I reckon.

I think I may have lost you, somewhere in the gravitational waves, Bob!!!:p

As long as I can hear those waves on a beach somewhere, all will be well. Sometimes the pace of scientific discoveries scares me a little.

Actually if they detect gravitational waves (very difficult, but predicted by Einstein) it will be a major scientific breakthrough in support of the theory of relativity. Exciting times indeed!!!:BigThumb:

Does that mean space travel thru time warps, & stuff?

Could do!!!! They have only a very limited knowledge of this but being guided by Einstein's General Theory of Relativity (GR) it could lead to the discovery of a curvature of space time or as you bluntly put it "travel through time warps". Google it up (I'm sure you already have) it makes interesting reading although very hard to follow.
Gravitational waves are caused by the collision of neutron stars or black holes and are very minute and hard to see. If space appears as a flat lake (for example) gravitational waves would appear as very minute waves on that lake but you would have to look very hard to see them and up to this point our instrumentation has not been sensitive enough and also gravitational waves are not part of the electromagnetic spectrum in the way that radio waves or X-rays are.
Astronomers are convinced gravitational waves exist but they have to be detected to be proven.
All complex stuff, Bob. I am only an interested amateur follower of this and I am struggling to fully comprehend it all, after all Einstein was a genius. I am just a mere human being.:D

I can't help feeling we live on the edge of some truly mind blowing scientific discoveries. I have a t-shirt. On the front it says " Albert Winestein", under that " Three wines and I'm a genius ". Daughters have a weird sense of humour.
